The tree idol.

The tree idol is a quest item made from a Chunese ancestor tree in Betrayal in Antara. It can be acquired in Chapter 4.

Overview

The tree idol is a unique item which occupies one Inventory space. The party can retrieve it from a house in Korus Landing if they have the Green Key.

The party first hears of the idol when they visit Jaeger Forest Meister in Korus Landing and hear about the wine-and-cheese reception he is throwing to celebrate his acquisition of the rare item. Arriving in Eastbank, they learn that the family tree tended by the Sumner family for seven generations has been cut down, an act of sacrilege which would never have been committed by anyone living in the area, and that a key too fancy to belong to anyone local was found by a woman who insists upon "returning" it to the party. The key fits the back door of the jaeger's house, allowing the party to retrieve the idol.

A tall jagged tree stump of mottled brown wood on a grassy area, with wildflowers and evergreen trees in the background.

If they return it to Sumner, he is too sickened by the sacriligious use of his tree to so much as look at it, but asks the party to bury it under the stump of the tree it was made from, which can be found east of the second forest grove north of town. If they find the stump and use a Shovel to bury the idol, they can report to Sumner, who sorrowfully says he'll ask a Sister of Senaedrin to bless the site, hoping it will finally be at peace. He then gives the party a 90% Sapphire which has been in the family for generations in thanks for their attempt to right the wrong done to his tree.

Description

The polished wood statue evoked a visceral reaction, simultaneously revolting and compelling. Where Grrrlf woodwork illuminated the material's natural form and beauty, it was almost as if this wood had been forced into something it didn't want to be.

Trivia

  • Although the stump appears slender and jaggedly broken, its description states that it is enormous and has been cut down with an axe.
  • It takes two uses of a Shovel to bury the idol. If the party tries to use a Shovel on the stump again, they reflect that having already buried the thing, it would be better not to dig it up.
