Tanneurs

Tanneurs, spelled Tannerus in the novelization, is a Midkemian village in Betrayal at Krondor. It can first be visited in Chapter 1.

Geography

Tanneurs lies north of Krondor, on the King's Highway skirting the western edge of the Dimwood. Immediately north of the town is Kellyn's solitary farm, and a crossroad further on forks northward to Eggley and eastward through the pass to the low grasslands of Sethanon.

History

Devon last heard of his friend Spitzer in Tanneurs.

Tanneurs is mentioned in three note which can be found by the party. In one, found in a trapped chest south of the Temple of Silban, Delekhan suggests that its recipients lie in wait on the eastern roads and stop the party before they reach Tanneurs. In another, found in a riddle chest near the temple, Narab requests all possible moredhel troops to be moved into Tanneurs to kill Gorath if he is found in the vicinity. Finally, in a fawning note to Nago, Fedrayh reports the placing of false notes about an attack south of Tanneurs in certain chests to lure the party into a trap.

Asked about a safe way to the South, Isaac advises against the road between Eggley and Tanneurs if they want to remain inconspicuous, since Gorath would probably draw remark during Eggley's upcoming Festival of the Stranger.

After tragic events marred the Festival, some residents of Eggley temporarily removed to Tanneurs, returning home after the festival's annulment.

Locations

  • Shop: Hamil's Pawn
  • Inn: Tom's Tavern, temporary residence of the Collector.
  • A musty, mossy house in terrible repair contains an elderly woman with a croaking voice, a tattered shawl, and mismatched shoes on her gnarled feet. She asks the party if they are "one of them shadow people," whom she hates and fears, and she suddenly shuts the door lest a shadow person slip past into her house.
  • A house which can be unlocked with a Peasant's Key contains a +6 Horn of Algon Kokoon.

Krondor: The Betrayal

A few months before the events of the book, James was nearly murdered in Tannerus when "some unhappy folks" there mistook him for someone else.[1]

On their way to Krondor, the party ponders whether to take the main road from Hawk's Hollow to Questor's View or lose a few days by taking the back way through Eggly and Tannerus. They defer their decision in favor of a good night's sleep, and ultimately feint toward Eggly but divert to Yellow Mule instead.[2] There, they overhear Nago and his moredhel colleagues discussing having lost track of them on the road and speculating that they have slipped past on the road through Tannerus.[3] In Nago's hideout, they find false messages intended to mislead the Prince's agents into expecting attacks at Tannerus and other unlikely places.[4]

Lysle Riggers, whom the party encountered near Lyton, attributed the attack on James in Tannerus to his own overdue return to the town with items purchased on the attackers' behalf.[5] Riggers departed for Tannerus the following day to put the matter right, riding westward from Lyton, although he warned James that they might not find him in the area should they look for him later.[6]
