Skyfire is a battle spell used by magicians in Betrayal at Krondor. It summons lightning to strike an enemy, but only if the enemy is carrying something made with metal.
Overview
For a cost of 12 Health/Stamina, Skyfire calls down a lightning bolt that inflicts 40 Health/Stamina damage on the target.
No additional items are needed to cast Skyfire, and the spell does not require the target to be in the caster's line of sight. There are two restrictions:
- its lightning bolt requires open sky and therefore cannot be cast underground.
- it can only be cast on enemies who are carrying objects made with non-precious metals, such as weapons or armor, therefore it cannot be used against Giants, Witch Hags, Trolls, Panath Tiandn, animals (Beasthounds, spiders, scorpions, Nethermanders, Wyverns), or otherworldly beings (rusalki, Shades, Dreads).
Acquisition
Skyfire can be purchased at Stardock Annex, Dabeh's Fanciful Trinkets, and Hakha's Cajunlo, or from Brother Marc for 100 sovereigns in Chapter 2. It can also be found in a locked chest in the Thieves' Highway.
Krondor: The Betrayal
James judges the absence of violent applications of magic in the Academy of Magic's curriculum to be a wise decision, as it would be undesirable for the students to roam the island flinging fireballs and lightning strikes at one another.[1]
Trivia
- The bolt of electricity summoned by the Lightning Staff is subject to the same restrictions as that cast by Skyfire.
- Skyfire is one of Patrus's starting spells.
- In the novelization, single-bolt lightning spells are not used, but a spell involving multiple strikes is used at Northwarden by Patrus.
