Queg

Queg is a Midkemian island kingdom which trades with the Kingdom of the Isles in Betrayal at Krondor, Return to Krondor, and their novelizations, Krondor: The Betrayal and Krondor: Tear of the Gods. It is best known for its exports, its vast naval fleet, Quegian Fever, and Quegian Pirates.

Geography and Governance

Queg is ruled by King Lebeus. His daughter-in-law Cassandra, Dauphiness of Queg, lives in the island's eponymous capital city. The next largest city, Palanque, is home to another noble, the Dauphiness of Palanque.

Devon refers to Quegian prisons as "King Lebeus's pain pens."

Queg's vast naval fleet at one time included Cassandra's private war galley, the Storm's Master, which was boarded by Devon and used to sink Lebeus's flagship with all hands aboard. Quegian galleys such as the Foamspinner can reportedly carry enough soldiers to fill a small village.

Commerce, Trade, Warfare

Since Kingdom sovereigns are worthless on Queg, rubies are the only form of payment accepted on the island.

Exports include Quegian Brandy and the hiring of Quegian mercenaries, who are sometimes press-ganged into service. A commonly known Quegian battle tactic is the pelting of enemies with gobs of foul-smelling, disease-infested mulch, leaving victims infected with deadly Sicknesses.

Due to the island's small size, most Quegian mercenaries have killed other mercenaries' family members and therefore do not gather in groups larger than three. Greater numbers of mercenaries only set their personal vendettas aside to work together if they are well paid.

Language

A possible dialog at Commons in Sar-Sargoth involves Gorath addressing, and then threatening, a mercenary in what he hopes is passable Quegian before Owyn interrupts their quarrel:

Gorath: "Scaba. Benuit tal regenus?"
Mercenary: "Pel niskum, seb michina chea."
Gorath: "Ved cadium, nes carlyannius. Caddan gutari sebruliya! Hekoch!"

Known Quegians

  • Devon
  • King Lebeus
  • Cassandra, Dauphiness of Queg
  • The Dauphiness of Palanque

Krondor: The Betrayal

The party battles a number of Quegan pirates on their way south from Yabon.

Quegans are among the human mercenaries hired by Delekhan to augment his attempted invasion of the Kingdom.

Trivia

  • Taverngoers in the Northlands tend to believe that Delekhan should hire Keshians instead of Quegians to improve the standard of the drinks stocked there.
  • In Chapter 5, the party explains their presence in Raglam's Hobble, a Northlands tavern, by claiming to be mercenaries from Queg. A moredhel there had heard Segersen was killed in a Quegian battle near Palanque.
  • In an occasional bar conversation, the party asks if a freebooter's scar was acquired from a Quegian press gang.
  • In the Northlands, Owyn steals a purse containing several types of currency, including Quegian coins,[1] a departure from the game's claim that Queg solely trades in rubies.
