Haseth

"Do not struggle so, Hasath. I wish to keep you alive. But be glad I do not. The goddess of death will show you greater mercy."
Gorath
Haseth

Haseth was a moredhel assassin in Betrayal at Krondor. He appears in the opening sequence of the game and in its novelization, Krondor: The Betrayal.

History

Haseth, though a kinsman of Gorath, was the third assassin sent by Delekhan to prevent Gorath and Locklear from reaching Krondor after their escape from the Northlands.

Gorath detects Haseth's presence while the party is encamped south of Yabon, just after Owyn Beleforte has finished tending to Locklear's wounds. Leaping forward despite his chains, Gorath warns Owyn against the assassin and, in a brief struggle, kills Haseth.

Afterwards, Gorath declines Owyn's offer to bury his kinsman, citing the moredhel custom of leaving the dead where they lie. The likelihood of encountering more assassins influences Locklear's decision to remove Gorath's shackles, and the party departs swiftly to gain distance before it is noticed that Haseth did not return from his mission.

Haseth's body remains where it fell as a gruesome marker of the game's starting point.

Inventory

Haseth carries +2 Picklocks and +4 Rations.

Krondor: The Betrayal

Haseth, Gorath's last blood kin,[1] was the one who taught him to hold a sword as a boy.[2] Haseth, loyal to Delekhan, later joins those hunting Gorath down for his departure from the Northlands, attacks the party's encampment near Yabon, and is strangled by Gorath's chains. Gorath explains the moredhel custom of not burying their dead, but advises Owyn to move it away from camp as it will be unpleasant by morning. Accordingly, after taking any supplies they find on it, they leave Haseth's body behind when they depart.[3]

Trivia

  • In the novelization, despite naming Haseth as the last of his kin, Gorath describes a moredhel attacker on the way to Hawk's Hollow as "my cousin, my kinsman,"[4] and explains his second escape from Sar-Sargoth to Obkhar by claiming that a guard posted outside his cell was a close cousin who sympathized with his situation and bought time for him to flee. However, dialog with Owyn and Liallan elsewhere gives the lie to the second claim, and the discrepency may simply indicate that Haseth's kinship with Gorath was closer and more significant in moredhel culture than kinship to a cousin.
