"Alphabet Soup!" is the thirteenth episode of the first season of Barney & Friends.
Plot
When Barney arrives to play with his friends, Derek plays "alphabet fun" by spelling a "mystery word" a letter at at time. The group plays games and sings songs related to each letter of the mystery word. Rhyming words, making alphabet soup, walking through the alphabet, and seeing how many letters they can make with their bodies, gives the children many chances to play with letters and words. Children learn that having fun with letters and words and learning the alphabet are the first steps to reading.

Adaptations
Hachaverim Shel Barney
- Hachaverim Shel Barney adapted this episode in many ways to fit the Hebrew Aleph Bet. For example, as Barney's name in Hebrew is only four letters (Bet, Resh, Nun, Yod (ברני)), the mystery word is instead Barney-le (ברנילה), which is six letters in Hebrew letters.
- "The Ants Go Marching" is shortened to six lines (instead of ten lines). A variant of the clip in "Barney Collection 2" shows the cast singing an additional three lines (counting up to nine ants). In addition, "Do Your Ears Hang Low?", "Yankee Doodle," and the "Alphabet Song" are all cut from the Israeli version of this episode.
- During "I've Been Working on the Railroad", the kids wear baseball caps instead of railroad engineer caps in this version.
- A demo shot of Barney and the kids singing "Alphabet Soup" is shown in the opening sequence of this season's adaptation.
- In this version, Baby Bop doesn't appear.
- Barney is voiced by Yehoyachin Friedlander instead of Avi Termin, although audio clips of the latter were heard in one scene.
