Winona Laura Horowitz (born October 29, 1971), known professionally as Winona Ryder, is an Academy Award-nominated American actress who played Call in the 1997 film Alien Resurrection. Other notable films Ryder has appeared in include Beetlejuice (1988), Edward Scissorhands (1990) and A Scanner Darkly (2006).
Ryder has been nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Actress for Little Women, Best Supporting Actress for The Age of Innocence) and has won a Golden Globe. For her role in Alien Resurrection, she was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. Ryder suffers from an acute fear of drowning, owing to a traumatic near-drowning she endured at the age of 12, and her condition meant many of the underwater shots in Alien Resurrection had to be reshot multiple times.[1]
