Spinners

"As the lost put their trust in the things that they themselves have made, you will know your brothers and sisters as they who trust in me. As the prideful build machines in their own image, you will know your brothers and sisters as they who keep man's image sacred. And when the idolaters at last bow before their graven images as their masters, know that the last days of eden are upon you…that the dogs of perdition are at your door…and seek the blessed garden that the prophet Adeline foresaw in days of old."
Ambrose reciting scripture from the Book of Steven (from Alien: Revival)

The Spinners were an Appalachian religious sect of technophobes that promoted simple living and traditionalist values. Initially present on Earth, the Spinners were disillusioned by the oversaturation of technology to which society had grown accustomed, and were strictly opposed to its use. Eventually, the Spinners were contracted by the United Americas to colonize the company-owned moon of Euridice, being promised by the UA that they would own the moon once terraforming was complete.

History

"Mother's wheel, life eternal, mother's loom, grace divine."
―Spinners chant (from Alien: Revival)

The Spinners revered an individual known as Adeline, who at some point served as the sect's prophet. The group was formed with the intention of rejecting the excessive amount of technology that society had adopted, and promote a style of simple living remote from said technology.

The Spinners faced constant persecution from the governing United Americas; however, the UA eventually struck a deal with the cult—if they were to serve as colonists for the UA moon of Euridice, the Spinners would be granted full ownership of the moon once terraforming was complete. Though the Spinners were initially hesitant, leading member Jane convinced the group to take the voyage.

After a successful voyage to the moon, the cult managed to terraform Euridice from a barren wasteland into a heavenly paradise, establishing the prosperous colony known as the "Garden of Adeline" within twenty years of colonization. However, on the day of complete terraformation, the colony was subject to a Xenomorph infestation after the infested UA Extrasolar vessel UAS Heraclides crash-landed on the moon.

Following the outbreak, Spinners member Leo theorized that the entire religion may have been started by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation for its own purposes. When questioned on this by Jane at gunpoint, the Synthetic Gregory refused to answer, knowing that the question would continue to haunt her.

Belief Structure

Adeline, Mother

According to Spinner doctrine, anyone who takes Mother into their heart is transformed, becoming Mother herself. The Synthetic Ambrose claimed to have seen the mother and stated that those who were implanted by Facehuggers become part of her, suggesting a connection to the Goddess seen by Facehugger victims. Whether or not they were one and the same was unclear.

Garden of Adeline

Spinner's Wheel

As far as religious iconography was concerned, the Spinners idolized the wooden wheel of a loom as a representation of their technophobic and traditionalist values.

Excerpts

  • For the greatest sin of all, sayeth Mother, is waste. To waste the life lost whether it be man, beast, or flower. But in the service of life, death is no sin, but a blessing unto all the living.
  • As the lost put their trust in the things that they themselves have made, you will know your brothers and sisters as they who trust in me. As the prideful build machines in their own image, you will know your brothers and sisters as they who keep man's image sacred. And when the idolaters bow before their graven images as their masters, know that the last days of Eden are upon you. That the Dogs of Perdition are at your door, and seek the blessed Garden that the prophet Adeline foresaw in days of old.
  • The Dogs of Perdition. Beasts as black as sin, they knew the wastrels' hearts and fed on their pride.

Book of Jude

Excerpts

  • For Mother's womb be all the Earth and all the worlds beyond, and all who bear her light within their breast become themselves our Mother, their flesh and will unmade and made anew.

Book of Randall

Excerpts

  • 7:13 The coward in life is doomed to live out his own secret fears forever in death. If you would know paradise, lay your fears at the feet of your kin, and fear will hold no power over you.

Behind the scenes

The Spinners bear resemblance to the Monastic Order of Arceon from Vincent Ward's canceled script for Alien III. Ward's setting was a man-made space station named Arceon, with its inhabitants a monastic order of technophobic monks.
