Tsenten

Tsenten was a member of the elected ruling council of Jasmine Island in the 50s BG. An idealist with a strong affinity for the Air Nomads' philosophy as well as connections to the Guiding Wind movement, he was a staunch supporter of his home's independence. As a result, he was the main opponent of Magistrate Emerald's attempt to annex Jasmine Island into the Earth Kingdom through a creeping coup. Tsenten eventually succeeded in this struggle by enlisting his Guiding Wind allies and loyalist Jasmine Island protectors.

History

Early life and career

A nonbender born on Jasmine Island, Tsenten had a different birth name. In his youth, he ventured as a student to the air temples, where he became so deeply attached to the Air Nomads' philosophy that he changed his name to "Tsenten" to honor his hosts. His stay among the monks also resulted in him meeting a young philosopher named Khandro. The two became good friends and would keep contact even after Tsenten returned to his home.[1]

Back on Jasmine Island, Tsenten strove to use what he had learned at the air temples to strengthen his home's "cultural capacities" and independence.[1] His efforts won him support by parts of the constituency, and he was elected into the island's ruling council. Tsenten's tenure as a councilmember became mainly focused on resisting the conspiracy of Magistrate Emerald – the Earth Kingdom's civilian representative on the island – who was covertly organizing a creeping coup to dismantle the native power structures to annex the island into the Earth Kingdom. As Emerald had already enlisted or blackmailed two other council members, namely Xi Chin and Fu Hong, Tsenten emerged as the main blocker of policy changes to the Earth Kingdom's advantage. He also advocated a reduction of the Earth Kingdom's political influence.[2][3]

Opposition to Emerald's coup attempt

Tsenten eventually discovered evidence of his fellow councilmembers' corruption, and realized that Emerald was not just using legitimate means to get his way. Determined to counter these subversive activities,[2] he turned to his own allies: As Tsenten had maintained contacts with Khandro, he had also developed links to Khandro's Guiding Wing revolutionaries. The councilman thus requested two Guiding Wind members, Fengying and Sakuru, to uncover the magistrate's covert machinations.[1] The two revolutionaries eagerly answered the request, but they were captured when infiltrating the Earth Kingdom base on Jasmine Island. When Emerald called for Fengying and Sakuru to be treated as criminals, Tsenten could not openly oppose the magistrate without implicating himself. Instead, he contacted Guiding Wind's leaders, Khandro and Zeisan, who hurried to Jasmine Island to achieve their followers' release.[3]

Khandro made his case for a release of the captured Guiding Wind members before the Jasmine island council, but only Tsenten supported his appeal, whereas Xi Chin and Fu Hong continued to support Emerald's demands for the prisoners' transfer to the Earth Kingdom.[3][4] As the disputes were still ongoing, Zeisan made contact with some Jasmine Island protectors, namely Ukiuk, Qi Wei, Pushi, Sukaya, and Baljin, secretly working with them to free Fengying and Sakuru as well as reveal Emerald's plans.[3]

As Emerald's plot began to unravel due to the protectors' intervention, the magistrate tried to capture the local councilmembers, hoping to force Tsenten into signing to a treaty giving the Earth Kingdom control over Jasmine Island.[2][3] Indeed, Xi Chin and Fu Hong had already signed the document in question without the knowledge of others.[5] With the combined efforts of the protectors and Guiding Wind revolutionaries, however, Emerald's conspiracy was eventually revealed. The magistrate was expelled from Jasmine Island.[6] The islanders soon recovered from the crisis, and reaffirmed their full independence.[7][8]

Personality

A community-minded person, Tsenten believed in the values of peaceful cooperation which inspired him to devote himself to Air Nomad philosophy as well as enter politics.[1] Conversely, his principles also made him a firm defender of Jasmine Island's sovereignty, with him being willing to engage in covert actions to aid this cause.[1]

Abilities

Though devoted to pacifist Air Nomad philosophy, Tsenten had some experience in martial arts and was skilled in disarming opponents.[1]
