Sukaya

Firebender

Sukaya was a member of the Jasmine Island protectors during the 1st century BG. Born on Jasmine Island as a firebender, she initially struggled to master her bending art until she found a teacher in the former soldier Fengying. Eventually, Sukaya was even able to attend a Fire Nation military academy before ultimately returning home. Joining the protectors to restore their former power, she subsequently helped to oppose Magistrate Emerald's conspiracy to annex Jasmine Island into the Earth Kingdom.

History

Sukaya was distantly descended from Fire Nation migrants who settled on Jasmine Island during the Kyoshi Era. She was the first member of her family to become a firebender after several generations, and thus tried to master her gift by herself. This changed when she encountered a former Fire Nation soldier named Fengying who regarded her as talented and volunteered to teach her. Sukaya proved to be a capable student, eventually leading to her being recommended to a Fire Nation military academy by Fengying. The young bender eagerly embraced this opportunity, and excelled at the institution.[2] She became a very good firebender, only leaving the academy when she was informed that her father had died.[1][2]

In response to her father's demise, Sukaya returned to Jasmine Island.[2] There, she found that the local security forces were embroiled in a crisis due to the activities of Magistrate Emerald, the civilian representative of the Earth Kingdom on Jasmine Island.[3] Emerald was organizing a creeping coup, undermining the island's old power structures to eventually annex it into the Earth Kingdom, though he did so slowly and covertly.[4] The protectors were among the organizations targeted by Emerald, and he managed to gradually dismantle them by replacing them with Earth Kingdom soldiers who could allegedly better defend the islanders.[3] Already trained as a warrior and eager to make a difference, Sukaya joined the protectors to restore, rebuild and strengthen them despite Emerald's efforts.[2] She thus became one of the few loyalists who remained protectors even as their organization crumbled.[3]

The entire situation changed when Emerald imprisoned two Guiding Wind revolutionaries, namely Sakuru and Sukaya's old teacher Fengying. This drew the attention of the Guiding Wind's leaders, Khandro and Zeisan, who traveled to Jasmine Island to help their followers. Conversely, Zeisan quickly realized that Emerald had largely subverted or disempowered the island's leadership, and thus opted to covertly ally with the few remaining protectors. She informed them of her suspicions regarding the magistrate, and asked them to help rescue Fengying and Sakuru to disrupt Emerald's schemes. The protectors readily agreed, and Sukaya alongside Ukiuk, Qi Wei, Pushi, and Baljin subsequently broke into the local Earth Kingdom base.[1][5][6] This mission ultimately led to a series of events which revealed Emerald's conspiracy to the public. Together, the protectors and Guiding Wind members foiled the magistrate's plans and secured Jasmine Island's independence.[5][7]

Personality

Confident and critical, Sukaya embraced her martial and military training, seeking to become a leading figure among the protectors to reform them into a powerful defensive force. She was not afraid to highlight the mistakes of others, yet also put herself into the crossfire to shield her trusted companions.[1][2]

Abilities

Sukaya was a powerful firebender, and specialized at thin, very precise jets of fire. Well-trained in combat techniques, she was quite good at dodging her opponents' attacks.[1][2]
