Kuruk was the Water Tribe Avatar who succeeded Avatar Yangchen and preceded Avatar Kyoshi of the Earth Kingdom.

History

As the Avatar, Kuruk spent his life fighting against dark spirits, who were on the verge of crossing over from the Spirit World into the mortal realm. His war on the spirits caused permanent damage to his body and left his soul corrupted, leaving him unable to control the Avatar State. At some point, the spirit Koh sought vengeance on Avatar Kuruk by stealing his lover Ummi's face.^[1]

Appearances in Avatar Aang's life

Avatar Aang visited Kuruk's shrine in the Northern Water Tribe and was able to meet him through meditation. Aang requested of Kuruk to take over his body as Kyoshi had previously done, but Kuruk refused, revealing to Aang that he could not control the Avatar State following his conflict with the spirits. Despite his sacrifices, Kuruk also revealed that he still could not save Ummi from Koh. He advised Aang that his friends would be a burden to his responsibilities as the Avatar, and that he should fight the Fire Nation alone.^[1]

When the Fire Nation invaded the Northern Water Tribe, Kuruk appeared to Aang as a vision and warned the young airbender about his spiritual knife that can kill the Ocean and Moon spirits. Kuruk implored Aang to stop Zhao from eradicating all of the waterbenders.^[2]
