Maly

Airbender

Maly was an inhabitant of the Foggy Swamp who developed airbending abilities following the Harmonic Convergence of 171 AG. She traveled to Republic City to learn how to handle her new abilities, but chose to leave the Air Nation. However, she stayed in the capital and became the leader of the Spider Cat Triad, a crime group down on its luck that largely served as mercenaries of Kyoko, the CEO of the Harmony Park Corporation.[1]

History

Maly was born a nonbender in the Foggy Swamp Tribe. When she began to show signs of airbending, it caused great alarm and confusion in her community. Her baffled but loving family sent her to Republic City to learn how to handle her powers. However, Maly chafed under Tenzin's tutelage, and chose to leave the Air Nation.

In spite of abandoning her airbending training, Maly was embarrassed to go home a failure. She stayed in Republic City and joined up with the Spider Cat Triad, as they were just as down on their luck as herself. Maly became the group's leader, mostly because she had hope things would get better and no one else wanted to organize and lead the group.[1]

Kyoko, CEO of the Harmony Park Corporation, met Maly in this vulnerable state. The corporate executive promised Maly that if she helped her, she would use her power to save Republic City from its suffering. Kyoko paid Maly's triad to spy on the tunnel races in the Republic City underground, and hoped to eventually have the police crack down on the races to stamp out competition for her legal, above ground races.[1][2]

The Spider Cats' leader stayed loyal to Kyoko, as the executive had been kind to her, supporting and aiding her while explaining a worldview that felt generally right. Maly assumed that if she did not understand the "why" of it, Kyoko had a larger plan. However, she started to be unsettled by the businesswoman's ruthlessness when she was dispatched to sabotage other vehicles and cause real harm to races. Maly started to be torn on the plan, both because of the doubts she started to have about Kyoko, and also because she and her fellow triad members had developed a true love of automobile racing.[1][3]

Personality

Maly was a free spirit, which led to her chafing under Tenzin's tutelage during her time spent with the Air Nation. She wanted to do the right thing and considered friendship to be very important.[1]

Abilities

Maly was able to use her airbending to effortlessly flow around blows, and could advance straight at an enemy to attack them at full force.[1] She also improved her airbending for automobile racing and was a considerable force to be reckoned with on the track.[4]
