Juniper Kim was a scientist residing in Republic City. Once a member of the Earth Empire's science division who worked on weapons technology, Juniper attempted to make up for her past actions through public service, and to develop peacetime uses for Earth Empire technology.
History
Juniper served in the Earth Empire's science division, contributing to the development of General Kuvira's war machines.[1][2] In the aftermath of Kuvira's siege of Republic City, Juniper wanted to atone by using her talents to heal rather than destroy. She arrived in Republic City and quickly found other scientists looking to use their skills to help those in need. She pitched a project to them: discover peaceful uses of wartime technology to aid Republic City.[1] Her past was not a secret, but she worked behind the scenes, and many were surprised to learn she worked for the Earth Empire. As she was seeking funding, she met Asami Sato, the CEO of Future Industries. Asami saw that Juniper's willingness to make up for past misdeeds was genuine, and the two became friends.[2]
With some pooled funds and pulled strings, Juniper and her team secured an unused building in one of the city's industrial areas and started their work. As interest grew among other innovators and politicians, Juniper got used to explaining how weapons and other technology could be harnessed for tools. However, those who did not share her vision started paying attention to the project as well. The Peace Lily Society opposed the use of technology and weapons invented through the oppression of the Earth Kingdom's people, and started protesting outside Juniper's laboratory for weeks.[1] Meanwhile, the Rising Flame Triad also kept a keen eye on the scientist, hoping that they could use the canisters to bolster their standing among Republic City's organized mobsters. On the more extreme end of the spectrum, Yoshiro's Equalists wanted to take the canisters to prove that radical anti-benders were still a threat to be taken seriously.[3]
Eventually, the canisters were stolen from the laboratory, along with weapons from Kuvira's mech. Juniper arrived one night to find the canisters were gone and the scientists working at the laboratory at the time were knocked out.[1] Two days later, Asami assembled a team to investigate, consisting of Tsemo, Rinzen, Kuyan, Nianzhen, and Samten. Juniper and Asami explained that the police were stretched thin tracking down the stolen weaponry, which had flooded Republic City's black market, and that they needed help tracking down the canisters.[4] Asami used her resources to help Juniper to keep all protesters and reporters at bay, as the scientist had no experience dealing with the press and the theft could turn out to be a PR disaster.[1]
Personality
Juniper wanted to help the world struggling through the use of technology. She was ashamed of working on Kuvira's war machines, and ever since fleeing the Earth Empire she tried to use her skills for good. She was always anxious about what people thought of her upon learning that she worked on the weapon that caused so much pain and suffering. Juniper was primarily driven to atone for her past and could be overcome with guilt.[2]
Abilities
Juniper was a scientist with technical expertise. Her technical know-how allowed her to quickly tune, repair, and adjust her available equipment.[2]
