Dr. Lemuel Kane is Lana Kane's father and an algae researcher and biochemist. He is not particularly fond of Sterling Archer for obvious reasons; he does, however, accept that he is A.J.'s father. Both he and his wife thus encouraged Lana to invite him to the family reunion. He first appeared in the episode "The Kanes". For the most part Dr. Kane is a loving and supportive parent. When she was a child, he and his wife pushed Lana towards academic excellence; they meant well, but this ended up putting a lot of pressure her when she was quite young. Though Dr. Kane remembered things differently, Lana insisted that she hated going to science fairs, recalling how she'd get car sick on the way. Flashbacks show Dr. Kane losing his temper just after Lana apologized for puking on him in the car, so clearly he had some memory of his daughter's anxiety. The flashback also shows how Lana's mom quickly scolded him for cursing. When Lana admits that she was so overwhelmed with worry about letting them down she that went on to withhold emotional connection in her adult life, Dr. Kane reassures her that he and her mother will always love her even when she makes mistakes (such as Archer). He is voiced by Keith David.
Trivia
- He has extensive knowledge of medieval Slavic history, and has a special interest in the roots of Serbian nationalism.
- Lana explains to Archer in one episode that if anything were to happen to her, then the custody of their daughter, Abbiejean, would go either to Lana's parents (the Drs. Kane, Claudette and Lemuel), or to Lana's sister, and not to Archer and/or his mother, Malory. At first, Archer is against this, but after thinking it over, he realizes that it's probably what's best for their daughter.
