- "Oh, gross!!! Cockroach! But now he's mine! All mine!!!" —Wild World
The cockroach (ゴキブリ, Gokiburi?) is an uncommon bug that can be found throughout the year in the GameCube games and Wild World, either inside the home or outdoors where it can be caught with a net. In subsequent games, cockroaches cannot be caught but can still be found inside neglected homes after a week of not playing.
In the outdoors they can be found resting on trees, flowers (GCN only), turnips and candy, but are only common on the latter two objects. They are generally regarded as being disgusting, most notably by Blathers, the curator of the museum and a sufferer of Entomophobia. They have the lowest selling price of any bug, at 5 Bells.

Donation to the museum
As with all bugs in the Animal Crossing series, the cockroach can be donated to the Museum by talking to Blathers, who will give a small talk on it.
In Animal Crossing
"Hoo... Uh... Huh-hoo? Is that a cockroach?! Oh, how repugnant! How foul! The vileness! The putrescence! Hoooo-ecchh! I will NEVER understand why we're required to include cockroaches in our collection. It makes no sense. Well, who am I to question management? Hoo, indeed! And in any case, what's one more filthy insect, eh wot? Hoooo, my... I hate this part. I hear it wriggling in there..."
In Wild World
Blathers, the curator of the museum, will barely try to contain his utter contempt for his least favorite of bugs:
"NOOOOOOO! Hoo-rrific! Please. I must protest! This is a cockroach, and a fearsome one at that! I'm terribly sorry for my outburst, but I simply abhor the wretched things. I often wonder aloud why cockroaches are even part of the collection, actually. The decision-makers atop the corporate ladder often seem quite daft, eh wot? Blech... well, I suppose I must take this."
The cockroach can be found running around the first room of the bug exhibit. They will run away from the player, jumping when too close. If a player tries to step on it, a sarcastic reminder will appear, probably written by Blathers, stating:
"Dear patrons: This cockroach is a thoughtful donation from (player's name). Please do not step on it."

In Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori

One cockroach makes a cameo in Gekijōban Dōbutsu no Mori, as one was caught by Yu as a present to Ai, who screamed in horror as it attached itself to her face.
Cockroaches in the house

In all the games, Cockroaches appear inside the player's home if the game has not been played for a week or more, which induces the shocked emotion whenever the house is entered. These cockroaches will scuttle around and hide under furniture, and cannot be caught. To remove cockroaches they can be squashed by walking over them, and hidden ones must be revealed by altering furniture. On death, an "angel" image floats away.
If only a few of the cockroaches are killed, already dead cockroaches will "respawn" when entering the house again. If a cockroach is in the player's house while a villager is present, the villager will appear horrified and leave.
In Animal Crossing, if the player has not the played the game for awhile, cockroaches can spawn if furniture is moved or placed when the max of two cockroaches have been killed.
Further information

- Main article: American cockroach on Wikipedia
The American cockroach, despite its name, is not native to the Americas, and was instead imported there via global trade networks, stowing away in the hulls of ships. They are worldwide in their distribution. They will feed on anything edible, and are capable of running at over 5km/h. They tend to only be active at night and are often considered a household pest. However, this species rarely causes an infestation, as it is so large, and its growth very slow, preventing the rapid reproduction that an infestation requires.
Trivia
- The cockroach angel image shown when a cockroach is stepped on is similar to a Pikmin angel.
