Saleen

Saleen is a minor recurring antagonist from the Disney animated television series, Aladdin. She is an evil mermaid sorceress with powerful aquatic abilities who attempts to steal Aladdin away from Jasmine.

Appearance

Saleen is a slender young red-headed woman in her early twenties with brown eyes.

Mermaid form

She is a beautiful mermaid, the fish part of her body looks like a lionfish. She has long red ocher hair tied at the end, wears a matching orange crown, orange shells on her chest, a white pearl necklace, and blue spiral shell earrings.

Human form

When she becomes human, she wears a long-sleeved skirt dress and orange shoes. Her dress is made up of an orange top with a skirt, whose design is the same as her train and has an open front, while her sleeves are made with a thin and transparent yellow fabric, they are bobacha and closed, and their fabric is up to the neck, which is exposed.

Personality

She is vain, scheming, bratty and spoiled. She sees herself as the most important and beautiful and also sees everything as a game. She is sadistic, having caused numerous ship wrecks and trying to steal Aladdin not because she liked him or found him attractive but simply thought it would be a fun game to win him over away from Jasmine. She is also spiteful, holding a grudge against Aladdin for rejecting her.

Powers and abilities

Both a mermaid and sorceress, Saleen has control over water, capable of forming a giant fist to hit Genie or simply use it for harming others. She can even disguise herself as a human and travel to different locations through her portals.

Equipment

With her magic starfish necklace, Saleen can change any human or animal into a sea creature. For example, she once transformed Aladdin into a shark.

Plot

She kidnaps Jasmine after seeing the Princess being ridiculed by Aladdin and Saleen decides to have him for herself and curses the Princess to remain in the ocean, but the curse will be broken once she returns. While Saleen goes onto land, Jasmine uses Saleen's lair which has enchanted water to connect with any water source and find Aladdin. Saleen is unsuccessful in seducing Aladdin, who loves Jasmine, and angers her. Jasmine informs Genie of how to free her and the group tricks Saleen by taking her to a fake seafood restaurant (created by Genie) allowing them to use a hidden trapdoor to send her back to the water, thus breaking the curse. Saleen then faces Aladdin and Jasmine while Armand holds off the rest of the group. Aladdin and Jasmine hold her off long to enough for Genie to get rid of both Saleen and Armand.

"Shark Treatment"

She steals a valuable statue bound for Agrabah to lure Aladdin. Once Aladdin arrives, she curses Aladdin using her Starfish, slowly transforming him into a shark under her control, treating him as a pet and using him as a replacement for Armand. Genie takes advantage of this to get Armand to join them and restore Aladdin to normal.

Trivia

  • Saleen's design is based on an old concept art of Ursula, the villainess from The Little Mermaid.
  • When Saleen uses her magic to give herself legs, she comments: "Legs. What's all the fuss about?" It's a joke/jab at The Little Mermaid, where Ariel wishes to have legs to go on land.
    • Earlier in the episode, when Armand is doing Jasmine's hair, he styles it like Ariel's, to which Saleen replies "she looks like every other princess under the sea", another light-hearted jab at the film.
  • Saleen's hair is the same color as the actress who voiced her: Julie Brown.
  • The word "saline" (of which Saleen is a homonym) refers to salt content - i.e., 'saline water' would be saltwater.
  • Saleen's attempts to steal Aladdin for herself are similar to those of another villain in the series, Sadira. However, Saleen is considerably more malevolent in her attempts, and, unlike Sadira, she never changed her evil ways nor formed a friendship with Aladdin.
