Aziz

Aziz is one of Aladdin's first adversaries in the Aladdin television series.

Appearance

Aziz was a small and ugly man, later turned to a goblin-like creature with sallow skin, and sporting a red langot.

Powers and abilities

As a human, he styled himself as an escape artist and a firewalker, although being poor at the former and used deception to trick people into believing the latter. But as a goblin, he possesses immense dexterity and can exhale magic smoke from his mouth for almost anything, including attacks, creating illusions of entire deserts, or even turning anyone into small slug-like creatures. It is apparent in the episode "Destiny on Fire" that these powers came with a price. As throughout the episode, Aziz seems to have a short breath, eventually catches on fire, and then explodes.

History

Seems Like Old Crimes

Aziz first appears in the two part episode Seems Like Old Crimes as a part of a small traveling circus along with his friends Fatima and Minos. They use the monkey Abu to pickpocket their audience, but eventually hire the young Aladdin to do this instead. When Aladdin objects to stripping innocent citizens of all their money, Minos brings him in on their plan to steal the fabled Destiny Stone. Aladdin, Minos, Fatima and Aziz go to the ruins where the Destiny Stone is kept. When the trio attempt to steal the Destiny Stone, they are instead trapped inside, while Aladdin and Abu escape. Many years later, the three of them escape. Aziz has become a goblin, Minos has become a minotaur and Fatima has become a harpy. With their newfound powers, the three of them go on a crime spree in Agrabah, eventually setting their eyes on conquering the city and getting revenge on Aladdin for causing them to be trapped for many years. They eventually return to the temple where the Destiny Stone was held, where after a brief conversation with Jasmine, Minos and Fatima, who have mutual love for each other decide not to kill Aladdin, which causes Aziz to turn against them and attack them with his magic breath. The Destiny Stone thus turns Minos and Fatima back into humans, while Aziz prefers to keep his powers and escapes.

Destiny on Fire

Aziz is defeated in this episode, where he uses his breath to transform all of Agrabah's people to slug-like creatures and take over the palace as well as bind Aladdin and Razoul together with a magic handcuff after noticing their own personal dislike towards the other. Eventually, Aladdin and Razoul noticed that overuse of Aziz's magic breath causes him to go on fire. When they have him try to destroy each other, Aziz eventually explodes and turns into three stars in the sky.

Trivia

  • "Aziz" means "along with honor" in Arabic, which is ironic given his evil nature.
    • In the Hebrew Bible, the root two-zayin (ז-ז‎) means 'reputable, powerful, sublime'.[1]
      • In ancient Levantine mythology, Azizos is a god of the morning star of Aramaic and Arab origin from Palmyra.
        • In ancient Arab mythology, Azizos or Aziz (Palmyrene: 𐡰𐡦𐡩𐡦 ʿzyz) is the Palmyran Arab god of the morning star. He is portrayed as riding a camel with his twin brother Arsu, although one source says that "Azizos is depicted as a horseman, whereas Arşu is a cameleer." He was venerated separately in Syria as god of the morning star, Phosphoros, in company with the astral god Monimos, Hesperos.
  • His goblin-like appearance and fire breathing may be a reference to Aillen or Áillen, an incendiary being in Irish mythology that played the harp or timpán and would lull his victims into a deep sleep with his music.
    • Aillen or Aillén Mac Midgna (the "Burner") was a fire breathing goblin and fairy musician of the Tuath Dé Danann. Every Samhain (Halloween), for 23 years, he came to the Hill of Tara in County Meath - the seat of the Irish High Kings.[2][3][4]
