Lulu is a character in Majora's Mask and the Terminan counterpart of Princess Ruto.[2]
Biography
Lulu is a member of the ever-popular Zora band The Indigo-Go's, of which she is the lead singer and daughter of the most famous singer the Indigo-Go's ever had, who shares the same name.[1]
Shortly before their performance at the Carnival of Time, Lulu laid seven Zora Eggs and lost her voice. Not wanting Mikau to know about it, she went to see Evan, the leader and pianist of the band, who recommended her to take the Eggs to the Marine Research Lab in Great Bay Coast to have them checked.[3] Unfortunately, one night, Lulu heard a strange sound late at night in her room, and when she opened her eyes, saw the Gerudo Pirates entering her room. Despite her attempts to fight back, they were able to steal her precious Eggs.[4] She now spends time in the Zora Cape helplessly gazing at the ocean. Only Evan, Mikau, and Toto actually know what has happened to her since Evan wants to keep it a secret as to not spoil everyone's hopes of playing at the Carnival of Time.[5] Despite this, Toto, the manager of the band, goes to Clock Town and talks to Madame Aroma to cancel their performance due to Lulu's condition.[6]
Mikau, having found out, tried to take back the eggs that were taken by the thieving women by going to their hideout, the Pirates' Fortress; however, he failed and ultimately ended up floating on the verge of death near the Great Bay Coast, where Link finds the young guitarist and obtains the Zora Mask after playing the "Song of Healing" for him. Once Link retrieves all of the Zora Eggs from the Gerudo Pirates and Pinnacle Rock, the newborns will teach him the "New Wave Bossa Nova".[7] Playing this song for Lulu as Zora Link will restore her voice and open the way to the Great Bay Temple. If Link as a Zora talks to her before their Band Rehearsal starts, she will mention that the "New Wave Bossa Nova" was a song that her mother used to sing to her when she was little; however, since she was so young, she had forgotten the melody, and tells him that the Eggs were laid to remind her of the song.[8]
If Link plays the complete version of the "Ballad of the Wind Fish" for Toto in the Milk Bar, Gorman will overhear it and grow nostalgic. He reveals that the reason he entered the entertainment industry was to meet the original singers of that song, including Lulu's Mother, who was also named Lulu.[9][10]
Lulu is last seen during the ending credits as she, along with the rest of the band members and Zora Link, perform an extended version of their rehearsal song at the Milk Bar during the Carnival of Time.
Other Appearances
Majora's Mask (Himekawa)
In the Majora's Mask manga by Akira Himekawa, Lulu appears after Link has first transformed into Zora Link via the Zora Mask and saved Lulu's Egg from the Gerudo pirates. As Zora Link walks up the shore of the Great Bay, Lulu mistakes him for the dead Zora Mikau. Link then pretends to be Mikau and informs her of his rescue of her Egg and helps her restore her lost voice.
Hyrule Warriors
Though Lulu doesn't appear in Hyrule Warriors, a reskin costume for Princess Ruto that is based on Lulu is available in the Master Quest DLC pack.
Nomenclature
Lulu means "pearl" in Arabic, possibly strengthening her connection with water. However, Lulu's Japanese name, ルル (Ruru), may simply be a corruption of her Hyrulean counterpart's name, ルト (Ruto).

Trivia
- Lulu is one of the few female Zoras seen throughout The Legend of Zelda series, while the vast majority are male.
- Like Princess Ruto in Ocarina of Time, Lulu's large fins on her arms periodically move as she stands.
- Although never outright stated in-game, it's strongly implied that Lulu had a romantic relationship with Mikau, similar to how her Hyrulean counterpart Ruto is with the Hero of Time apparently as a couple. During the cutscene of Mikau's vision when Link heals his soul, she can be seen holding hands with him as the two walk toward the other members of their band. In addition, when Link in his Zora form speaks to Japas, the hero learns a hint that he and Mikau are trying to win her affections.
- Lulu shares the same singing sound effect as Malon from Ocarina of Time.
- Interestingly, although Princess Ruto does not play any role whatsoever in Majora's Mask, she as an adult can be spawned into the game by ROM hacking, as her model remains in the game's code. This heavily suggests she was indeed used by the developers as the basis for Lulu's design, as the engine from Ocarina of Time was reused.
