Garo

"To die without leaving a corpse... That is the way of us Garo."
Garo Robe

The Garo are a race from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Clothed in robes and armed with daggers, the Garo are an ancient race proficient in the art of Ninjutsu. According to Pamela's Father, who studies paranormal activity in Ikana, they were sent from an Enemy Nation to spy on Ikana. It appears that some time before the events of Majora's Mask, many or all of the Garo were killed and linger on in Termina as empty shells known as Garo Robes, still continuing to spy upon Ikana. Various Garo Robes can be found throughout the canyon. If Link wears the Garo's Mask where Tatl senses a "thirst for blood", a Garo Robe will appear, believing Link to be its master. The Garo Robe will quickly realize that Link is not who he appears to be, and will attack him. If slain, they will acknowledge Link's skill and reveal their wisdom, giving hints that help Link in his quest through Ikana Canyon. The Garo Master, a skilled warrior and possibly the leader of the Garo, can be found in the Stone Tower Temple and later in the Secret Shrine and in a Moon Dungeon.

In Majora's Mask 3D, in the Ocean Fishing Hole there is a species of Fish called the Ninja Flounder which are the faithful pets of the Garo ninjas of Ikana and utterly obedient to their ninja master (presumably referring to Garo Master). Because of their connection with the Garo, they can be caught using the Garo's Mask (which is designed after the Garo Master in Majora's Mask 3D).

Etymology

It is possible that the Garo are based on a real life tribe in India that is also known as the Garo.
