Calico

Not all skeletons are like Bones, kid. Some of us believe in something else. For a while, I thought we could change things, end Skullivar's tyranny, take command of the Demoniac, and do some good! We want to be free from the shackles.

—Calico, "Mutiny on the Demoniac"

Calico is a skeleton who formerly served as the first mate of Skullivar's army. After he was labeled a mutiny by his general Golden Bones, he was imprisoned on The Demoniac for a long time until the arrival of Clovis who helped regain his hope to get out of his prison. Calico now roams the Bermuda Triangle as a liberated skeleton after his escape from The Demoniac.

Appearance

Calico is a skeleton with white bones and glowing green eyes. However, what makes him stand out from the other identical-looking skeletons is that he wears an eye patch with a circle in another circle as well as having a red bandanna on his head.

Personality

Unlike the other skeletons of Skullivar's army, Calico is kindhearted and friendly as shown when he first met Clovis after the latter was locked in the same cell as him by assuring him that he will not harm him and is gentle towards his cellmate.

Because he was locked up in the brig for a long time and was forgotten by his fellow skeletons, Calico was despondent and cynical, believing that there's no such thing as freedom and it's "just a dream". His despondent was so severe that he felt he would never leave his cell even before he met Clovis. He even called Zak "a fool" for believing that "freedom is in [their hearts]" because of this. However, despite Calico's hopelessness, he is very trusting and helpful. When Clovis claims that his captain Zak Storm is willing to fight Golden Bones in The Demoniac just to free him and Calico as well, Calico believes him and is willing to help his newfound friend to reach out to Zak so he can come and rescue them.

As a result of being inspired by both Clovis and Zak, Calico is now an optimistic and confident skeleton who is willing to fight back Skullivar and his army so he can be free from his tyrannical leader. This was demonstrated when after he was sent back to the brig and Zak was later placed in the same cell as him on The Demoniac, Calico didn't feel upset like earlier and instead, he optimistically told Zak to have faith in his crew.

Abilities

Like all the other skeletons, Calico's body parts can fall apart and put themselves back together. He also knows how to drive a hydrofoil.

Relationships

Clovis

Mutiny on the Demoniac 157

Calico befriends Clovis when the latter became a prisoner onboard The Demoniac after he accidentally regained his physical form as a side-effect of the Seven Cs using the Misty Dematerization to escape from The Demoniac assault. Calico is gentle towards his cellmate, assuring him that not all skeletons are like Golden Bones, and told him his story on why he was locked up in the brig because of his attempt to form a revolution against Skullivar. While Calico only knew Clovis for a short amount of time, he was protective of the young boy and trusted him when Clovis claimed that his captain Zak is willing to sneak onto The Demoniac to rescue them. And because of Clovis' kindness and determination to help him escape from his prison after mentioning Zak, Calico was willing to help Clovis with his plan to reach out to his captain and thus, regain his confidence and hope to escape from Golden Bones for good. When Calico eventually escaped from The Demoniac, he thanked Clovis for inspiring him to regain his hope and indirectly rescued him before wishing him luck as he drove away on his hydrofoil.

Zak Storm

Mutiny on the Demoniac 356

While Calico barely knows Zak, he respects the boy for being Clovis' captain who is willing to fight back Golden Bones and his army. Calico first heard of Zak when Clovis tries to encourage the mutineer that Zak believes that while no one is free in the Bermuda Triangle, "freedom is in [their heart]". Calico, who was losing any hope for freedom, found Zak's ideology outlandish and openly called him "a fool" in front of Clovis, but after the boy defended Zak by claiming that the latter would come and rescue him, Calico was genuinely surprised that Zak is willing to risk his life to save Clovis and could even set him free too. This inspired him to regain hope to be free from being a prisoner on The Demoniac.

Later, after Zak surrendered himself to Golden Bones to keep Clovis safe, the hopeful Calico finally got to meet the captain in person. The mutineer skeleton called him "brave" and assured him to have faith in his crew who would come to rescue both of them by telling him that "freedom is in [their heart]", not knowing that it's the exact same advice Zak gave to Clovis earlier which allowed Zak to trust Calico. When Calico eventually escaped from The Demoniac during the incident with the Misty Dematerialization, he also thanked Zak for liberating him and hope to run into them someday during his self-journey around the Triangle.

Skullivar

Skullivar was Calico's superior during his time as the first mate to his army. According to Calico, he views Skullivar as a tyrant and wants to form a revolution to fight for every skeleton's freedom.

Golden Bones

Mutiny on the Demoniac 206

Golden Bones was Calico's general of the skeleton army. While the extension of the relationship between Calico and Golden Bones is unknown, Calico mentioned having once rescued his general from a sea monster in an unknown sea. However, after Golden Bones discovered Calico is part of a renegade group of skeletons, the latter was put in the brig and got stripped from his title as Golden Bones' first mate.

Even after Clovis arrived as a prisoner of The Demoniac, Calico still holds a grudge against Golden Bones for mistreating him and the other skeletons to follow Skullivar's orders. When Clovis and Calico were both at the command center as part of Clovis' plan to contact The Chaos for help, Calico immediately called Golden Bones out for ungratefully locking him up even after he rescued him from the sea monster years ago and he tried to encourage the other skeletons at the command center that they should fight back Golden Bones and Skullivar so they can be free from the latter's tyranny.

His fellow skeletons

Mutiny on the Demoniac 201

Before Calico became a mutiny, he and a small number of skeletons were part of a revolutionary group with the goal to end Skullivar's tyranny so they can be free from serving him. However, according to Calico, after Golden Bones discovered the rebels, he puts an end to it and forces every skeleton to fall in line, causing every rebel skeleton to left Calico behind by looking him up in the brig of The Demoniac due to their fear of angering their general.

History

Pre-Season 1

Prior to the events of the series, Calico used to serve under Skullivar as part of his skeleton army where he was the first mate to General Golden Bones. At some point, he started to see Skullivar as a cruel tyrannical leader that he secretly started questioning since all the skeletons have done is commit malicious acts while serving him. For a while, he thought the skeletons could someday make a change by ending Skullivar's tyranny and taking command of The Demoniac so they can do something good for a change as well as be free from being his obedient servants. While not much is explained in the series, Calico had, at one point, saved Golden Bones from a sea monster but Golden Bones eventually found out about Calico is one of the rebels against Skullivar. This resulted in the mutineer being stripped from his first mate title and locked up in the brig of The Demoniac where he's being viewed as a traitor within the army. And because Golden Bones is extremely loyal to his leader, he also puts an end to any more uprisings which forces everyone to fall in rank due to their intense fear of angering their general. Since then, Calico has been locked up in The Demoniac brig for a long time.

Season 1

In "Mutiny on the Demoniac", Calico was still locked up in the brig until Clovis, who regained his physical form because of a side-effect with the Misty Dematerialization, arrived and was placed in the same cell as him. Calico, not knowing that Clovis used to be a ghost, kindly introduced himself to his new cellmate and was genuinely surprised that Clovis haven't drunk any water for a long time after witnessing Clovis happily trying to drink a drop of water that was falling from the pipe on the ceiling. At first, Clovis initially didn't trust Calico after the former's experience with fighting against Golden Bones and his army, but Calico assured the young boy that not all skeletons are cruel like Bones before he started telling his cellmate about the skeletons wanting to rebel against Skullivar but to no avail ever since Bones put an end to it. Calico, who at this point has become cynical and lost any hope for freedom, despondently told Clovis that they'll never leave the brig. When Clovis refused to give up and tried to search for a way out, he tries to encourage Calico by telling him that the former's captain Zak Storm taught him that while they can't be free on the outside, they can instead feel freedom on the inside. Calico called Zak a fool when he didn't believe in the ideology, but Clovis defended his captain and assured him that Zak would come to save both Clovis and Calico, much to Calico's surprise that Clovis trusts someone who is willing to risk his life to rescue them.

Regaining his hope again, Calico started teaming up with Clovis to hatch their plan of escaping from The Demoniac and help Zak with his rescue mission. Since Calico knows everything about The Demoniac during his time as a first mate, they are going to call Zak on the radio from the command station to send him a message. After Clovis alerts the guards that he and Calico have "important information" for Golden Bones, the guards bring them both to the command station. To help Clovis who's going to call The Chaos on the radio, Calico distracted Golden Bones by delivering a speech to the other skeletons that they should rebel against Skullivar and Golden Bones because of the mistreatment they experienced from them. However, when Clovis gets caught by Golden Bones while in the middle of the call and made a run for it, Calico can't help his new friend since he's surrounded by his fellow skeletons and he was taken back to the brig again where he's awaiting for Bones to throw him overboard once the army captures Clovis.

Even though Calico was locked up again, his words and encouragement about rebelling against Skullivar managed to convince a small number of skeletons to fight back against Golden Bones and be on Clovis' side to help the latter escape from The Demoniac.

Later, after the army captured Zak following his surrender to protect Clovis from being harmed by Golden Bones and Clovis made his escape back to The Chaos, Calico met Zak when he was locked in the same cell as him and was impressed by his bravery just as Clovis claimed him to be. At first, Zak didn't trust Calico since he's a skeleton, but the mutineer encouraged the captain to have faith in his crew and that freedom is in their heart, which is the same advice Zak gave Clovis before the latter was captured by Bones. As the two are waiting for the Seven Cs to come to rescue them, they both hear a broadcast transmitted by Clovis from The Chaos after Caramba hacked into the radio system. They listened as Clovis encouraged the skeletons that it's not too late to fight back Golden Bones as well as telling them that they should also help Zak by bringing Calabrass back to him, which one of them did and set both Zak and Calico free from their cell.

When the Seven Cs is about to activate the Misty Dematerialization as part of Clovis' plan to rescue Zak, Calico quickly got out of the brig and went to where The Demoniac stored its hydrofoils. Calico managed to get out of The Demoniac in time before The Chaos short-circuited the system, allowing himself to drive away from Golden Bones and his army without being detected by them. Calico called The Chaos on-speaker to speak to Clovis and Zak, thanking them both for inspiring him to escape from The Demoniac and he's now free to roam the Bermuda Triangle on his own. He then wished the Seven Cs luck before ending his call as he drove off to explore the Seven Seas.

Trivia

  • Calico is the first skeleton to be given a name. The next skeleton with a given name is Carver.
    • Coincidentally, while both Calico and Carver have a name that starts with a "C" and are characters that play a significant role in the series, they are both foils to each other. While Carver would later be promoted as general in "The Lost Orb" and remains loyal to Skullivar, Calico becomes a mutineer and rebels against Skullivar.
  • It's unknown how long Calico was locked up in the brig of The Demoniac.
  • Since Calico was the first mate of the skeleton army, he knows every entrance of The Demoniac as well as its weak point.
