Everything by everyone

―Newgrounds slogan

newgrounds is an American entertainment website created and owned by Tom Fulp. The website is mainly used in the categories of games (mainly Adobe Flash ones), movies, audio, and art, where people can create or view them.

You can create something from one of these categories on the website. Additionally, your creation will go through a process as to where users can play and rate your creation. If your creation has a low rating, then the creation will ultimately be removed from the website. This process has been commonly referred to as “blammed”.[1]

History

In 1991, Fulp launched a fanzine under the name "New Ground" sending issues to an online service. Years later, the website would be popularized by its Flash games and animation, drawing the attention of many animators. Adobe Flash Player was needed to play the flash games and movies, the site hired members to produce various Flash games, in which Newgrounds became one of the most popular active Flash communities in the English-speaking internet. Newgrounds would reached 1 million members in 2008, and 2 million by August 2010.

On 2012, the Newgrounds website went through a revamp and a massive feature was added to the site which made is possible to post HTML5 games and .mp4 movies on the site as oppose to Flash. Because of this new feature, Newgrounds was able to remain as an animation and game portal after January 12, 2021 when Flash Player became unusable but a lot of the classic Flash games can still be played if the user has Ruffle or Newgrounds flash player.

The website gained a massive resurgence to fame in the early 2020s due to the popularity of the indie rhythm game, Friday Night Funkin'. The game also had its former mascot Pico as one of their rivals.

To this day, the Newgrounds website has left an extraordinary legacy and footprint on the internet, and has developed a large fanbase on multiple platforms.

Channel

newgrounds's YouTube channel was created on March 6, 2006, and the first video was uploaded on January 18, 2011. The channel uploads user-generated content from their websites, mainly animations and more.
