McAuley (born: September 7, 1999 (1999-09-07) [age 25]),^[1] better known online by his nickname Mac or as his YouTube username Good Politic Guy, is an American socialist political commentator and producer. Having started his channel in 2020, Mac delivers news accompanied by a leftist perspective to his audience. He is considered an up-and-comer in the BreadTube sphere as one of the emerging Gen Z commentators in a field traditionally dominated by past generations.

On 10 January 2023, Mac was announced to have been hired as a producer for Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti's Breaking Points.^[2]

Early life and education

Mac was born on September 7, 1999 in Atlanta, Georgia, where he spent a majority of his life. He is the child of two journalists, his mother having retired from the field and his father—a war correspondent who has visited the Levant—continuing to work in the profession. He is the youngest of two siblings, born second to an older sister. His heritage includes Australian and British ancestry. Raised Catholic, Mac attended Catholic schools throughout his education including Marist High School in Atlanta.^[3] During his time at Marist, he became interested in politics, first beginning to follow geopolitical news on YouTube at the time. He has credited his father and various leftist news channels as having shaped his political views, with the 2020 presidential election serving as a flashpoint. Kyle Kulinski in particular has been cited by Mac as being one of his primary inspirations and the two would later form a professional relationship as well as a personal friendship.

In college, Mac has pursued his interests in politics, seeking a major in political science from Georgia State University.

Career

Before Mac began to upload consistently on YouTube, he launched a Twitter account, having been spurred by the ongoing 2020 election style. His tweets have garnered attention in leftist circles and have been featured in mainstream U.S media.^[4][5][6][7]

Mac saw a breakthrough in his career when one of his videos was reacted to by Kyle Kulinski on his channel Secular Talk in 2022. After which, he began to gain subscribers and views at an accelerated rate. On May 28, he appeared on Krystal Ball and Kyle's popular left-wing podcast Krystal Kyle & Friends. Krystal and Kyle have lauded Mac for producing aesthetically as well as substantively professional content that they claim has been suppressed by the YouTube algorithm. Mac himself has expressed frustration with the algorithm's documented^[8] bias against independent news & politics.^[9]

In 2022, Mac was hired by Breaking Points as a producer alongside friend Griffin Patrick Davis, their employment being announced in January 2023 by Krystal and her co-host Saagar Enjeti. Breaking Points was initially envisioned as a continuation of Krystal and Saagar's Rising program on The Hill TV, but has become a burgeoning network in its own right, bringing a wide variety of content creators under its banner.

After Krystal and Kyle married on May 6, 2023 Mac filled in for Kyle on his show whilst the couple was on their honeymoon.^[10]

Personal life

After his introduction as part of Breaking Points, Mac proceeded to move to Washington D.C. in order to be closer to the production studio. As of June 2023, he is in a relationship with an unnamed girlfriend.^[11] He owns a dog.
