Moon (2199)

This article is about Earth's natural satellite in Space Battlelship Yamato 2199 and its sequels. For its counterpart in the original Space Battleship Yamato, see Moon (OS).

The Moon is the Earth's natural satellite. It's been a central strategic location during the Garmillas War and the home of various significant structures under the Earth Federation. It's currently undergoing reconstruction after it suffered damage in the Golem Assault Battle.

Overview

Topography of the Moon

The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. Compared to Earth's, its diameter of over one-quarter and its mass is one-eighth, making it the largest satellite in the Solar System when compared to its planet. Due to tidal force, it always shows the same side to Earth. The Moon's tidal force also deform the sea level on Earth, causing tides. The gravity on the Moon is one-sixth of that on Earth.[3]

The topography of the Moon is completely different on the front side, which faces Earth, and the backside. The front side is made up of many flat lowlands called seas, while the back side is almost entirely covered with craters. Even though they are called seas, they are not pools of water, but plains formed from solidified lava that flowed in ancient times. The Moon's density is close to that of Earth's mantle.[3]

After the Gatlantis Campaign in 2203, the Moon sustained significant damage, losing approximately 21% of its mass.[4] Subsequently, the satellite's mass was restored, and its surface was redesigned in a stepped pattern.[5]

History

Earth is hit by a proto-planet

During the final stage of the Solar System's formation, a Mars-sized proto-planet, the last in the Solar System, collided with the Earth, merging with it and sending debris into orbit. The impact's energy caused some of the debris to melt or vaporize and solidify in orbit, creating a ring. Over time, the debris in the ring coalesced into a single celestial body, forming the Moon. This theory explains the Moon's large size compared to Earth and why its orbit is closer to the ecliptic than Earth's equatorial plane.[3]

The Earthling race first set foot on the Moon in 1969 with the Apollo 11 mission.[6]

Lunar base saito nagakura

The United Nations Cosmo Force set up a base on the Moon some time prior to 2199. During the Great Garmillas War, the satellite became the last line of defense of the Earthling species and the home of the Lunar Area Army under the control of Space Defense Command.[7][8] On February 9, 2199,[9] the lunar base was attacked by a Garmillas carrier, leading to severe losses among the ranks of the 7th Space Cavalry Regiment.[1]

Garmillas Embassy

Following the end of the conflict, the lunar base was used as the headquarters of the Lunar Air Corps and the testing ground for next generation fighters. It also became the home of the Garmillas Empire's embassy to the Earth Federation and of a new medical facility that took care of children suffering from Planet Bomb Syndrome.[10][11][2]

On June 2, 2203,[12] during the Golem Assault Battle, the Moon facilities were evacuated before the satellite's surface was hit by a devastating beam from the Ark of Destruction.[13] The attack caused the Moon to lose 21% of its original mass.[4] The resulting debris began falling onto the Earth, causing a constant metheor shower to hit the planet for the following months. The Earth Federation immediately begun a reconstruction plan managed by the warship Ginga. Using an ARGO system, the Ginga gradually gathered the shattered pieces of the Moon. By December 2203, 7.5% of the Moon had been reconstructed.[14]

Ginga's mission ended after about a year in 2204. Afterwards, the rebuilding was handled by private contractors. The mass that had been irreparably lost was taken from asteroids, and the shattered lunar surface was levelled in a stepped pattern.[15] The project was concluded between 2205 and 2207.[5][16] By 2207, the reconstructed Moon had become the location of Baleras III.[17] The Ginga crashlanded on the facility in October, at the end of the Invasion of the Ground Reverse.[16]
