This article describes the planet Garmillas as depicted in Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and its sequels. For the planet's dominant species, see Garmillans. For their language, see Garmillas (language). For the planet's counterpart in the original Space Battleship Yamato and Yamato: The New Voyage, see Gamilas.
Planet Garmillas (GARMILLAS, Garmillas), formerly[8] called Great Garmillas Imperial Planet or simply Great Garmillas (DEYN GARMILLAS, Deyn Garmillas)[9], was the third planet of the Salezar system along with Iscandar, inside the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is the homeworld of the Garmillas people and the capital of the Garmillas Grand Duchy and its successor, the Greater Garmillan Empire.
Overview

Garmillas is located one hundred sixty-eight thousand light years from Earth.[2][5] The planet possesses an atmosphere similar to that found on Earth before and after the Great Garmillas War, with variable temperatures and precipitation.[5][10] Viewed from space, nearly the entire surface is covered in green foliage, with only small bodies of water[11] and no large ocean present. There also seem to be less clouds than there are on Earth.[7] Garmillas is distinguished by large gaps in its upper crust, created when the Greater Garmillan Empire cut sections from the crust and transported them to other parts of their intergalactic empire as sources of biological material for environmental engineering projects.[12][13] The gaps have a diameter between 1,500 and 2,500 km, with the largest one having a major axis of about 4,500 km.[7] The upper crust is composed of welded tuff, an extremely strong bedrock formed by the sedimentation of pyroclastic deposits. Underneath it there are vast interconnected hollow regions containing gold-tinted lakes and seas, and it is here that the Garmillan people built their cities and other facilities.[4][7][14]
History
- For more details, see Garmillas (ethnicity), Garmillas Grand Duchy, and Greater Garmillan Empire.
The composition of the planet indicates a period when a large amount of crushed material similar to volcanic ash covered the surface, which were then heated and compressed into welded tuff.[7]

At some point in the distant past, Iscandar's empire searched for a species which could only survive bounded to a specific habitat, finding the perfect candidate in the Galman people, they thus used the Cosmo Reverse System on Iscandar's lifeless twin planet and guided a group of Galmans towards their new world, they then renamed them Garmillas, which in ancient Iscandarian means "Garmann Apes", the Garmillas were then used by Iscandar to bring war to other species.[15]
The Garmillas people populated and developed the vast open areas beneath the planet's surface, leaving the outer crust to grow into green wilderness. Despite their eventual expansion to and conquest of other star systems, the homeworld remained the undisputed center of power and influence for both them and their conquered subjects.[5][14][16]

In year 2170, the planet was united into the Garmillas Grand Duchy by Erich Vam Desler following a long unification war, four years later Erich revealed to a small circle of nobles that their planet was reaching the end of its life cicle, and in a few decades it would be completely destroyed,[6] unbeknownst to him the reason for Garmillas's impending destruction was Iscandar's use of the CRS on the world thousands of years beforehand.[15]

In the year 2199, Garmillas briefly became a battlefield in the empire's war with the distant planet Earth. An Earth battleship penetrated the planet's defenses and attacked the palace of Leader Abelt Desler in the capital city of Baleras. In response, Desler escaped into space and twice attempted to destroy the invading ship by means that would have wiped out the city and potentially much of Garmillas. However, his attempts were thwarted, and Desler was believed to have been killed, ending his regime.[17] Garmillas continued to be the heart of the empire, but under the leadership of a reform-oriented and democratic government.[6][18][19]

After the end of the Gatlantis Campaign, Desler resurfaced and allied himself with the democratic government in order to find a new world to emigrate towards. After the rediscovery of planet Garmann in 2205, a mass emigration was organised.[20] However, as one of the first emigration fleets made preparation to depart towards Garmann, the mysterious Dezariam attacked Garmillas with the objective of destroying the planet in order to move Iscandar to their homeworld. Following a brief battle with the Desler Fleet, Dezariam managed to destroy the imperial planet, killing most of its population.[1]

Notes
- The demonym for Garmillas is either "Garmillan" or "Gamirasian".[21][22]
- In Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - Astronomical Research, Professor Toshihiro Handa theorises the the welded tuff making up the surface of Garmillas might have been the result of an impact with a metheorite in ancient times, which would also be the cause of the large craters on the world's surface. The large forests on the upper crust would thus be the result of planetary-scale afforestation to revive the destroyed planet, and Garmillan cities would've been built underground to protect the results. He also mentions the possibility of Iscandar having used weapons of mass destruction on the planet.[7]
- Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - Astronomical Research uses the original series spelling "Gamilas" for the planet.[7] This spelling is also used in the official English subtitles and dub.[23]
