Gami-loid

Gami-loid is the provisional designation used by the Earthling space battleship Yamato to refer to Garmillan mechanical soldiers, a type of advanced robot used by the Greater Garmillan Empire for a variety of military and support functions.

The external bodies of Gami-loids are covered in an epidermis made of soft tektite rubber, providing durability and flexibility. On their heads, they had an integrated sensing unit, which included four eye-like electro-magnetic sensor units. Their hands were referred to as "manipulators" by the Yamato crew, and they possessed a gravity control mechanism in the legs.[1] They also have two internal conduction systems similar to veins.[2]

Gami-loid control unit

The central component of the Gami-loid is its control unit, which is located within its chest. This complex device consists of two main sections: an information processing section, where various data is received and processed, and a physical environment control section, which regulates and maintains the body's temperature, functioning similarly to a heart. Key components of the control unit include the main control unit, the information processing unit, the external terminal connection unit, the information transmission distribution unit, the cooling and power transmission system, and the function tube. The control unit is also the location of a Gami-loid's memory storage unit.[1]

At the microscopic level, Gami-loid design blurs the line between machines and organisms, with nanotechnological devices functioning in ways that resemble organelles inside living cells.[2]

Gami-loids can function in a wide range of environments, including vacuum and temperature and radiation extremes, without additional protection. In the role of soldiers, they can use the same weapons and vehicles with the same facility as members of the Imperial Garmillas Defense Force. Gami-loids demonstrate speed and strength that at least equal humanoid combatants. They also exceed humanoid agility, able to jump and fall great heights and to re-articulate their arms and legs in order to run low to the ground.[1][3][4] They are usually equipped with a special combat suit and helmet,[5] which may vary in color from dark grey to beige.[3][6] They can also be equipped with a jet-pack.[4] Gami-loids are usually armed with a standard automated rifle[7] and with a unique T-shaped handgun operated by palm connector.[3][7]

Gami-loids can communicate with people and with one another verbally, and are capable of receiving and using data transmitted wirelessly. They can easily hack into alien computer systems, and can project data access plugs from their hands on long cords in order to operate computers from a distance.[1][4]

Designation

The term "mechanical soldier"[6] is used by Garmillas to refer to the robots, but the space battleship Yamato's crew coined the term "Gami-loid" to refer to them. This was only a temporary designation, although it was the most commonly used one. The formal complete designation used by the crew was "Made in GARMILLAS HUMAN TYPE BATTLE DROID", and the abbreviation "G.H.M.S".[1][2]

History

Prison Planet 17 welcoming

The Greater Garmillan Empire increasingly relied on Gami-loids as Supreme Leader Abelt Desler pursued a policy of territorial expansion that exceeded the capabilities of the empire's regular military forces. Some officers, like Commander Wolf Flakken, were critical of robots taking over roles that traditionally belonged to flesh and blood soldiers, and saw them as a sign of imperial decline.[6][8] Among their assignments, Gami-loids performed reconnaissance and strike missions, guard duty at large prison facilities, and operation and protection of Desler's flagship, Deusura II.[6][3][4]

The remains of three Gami-loids defeated in battle on the Saturnian moon Enceladus were retrieved by the crew of the United Nations Cosmo Navy space battleship Yamato, studied, and used to build a new Gami-loid individual named Alter.[1][3][2] Experience in creating Alter also allowed the Earthling crew to write a computer virus that was used to infect a Gami-loid battalion and stop an attempt to take control of the ship during the Battle with Desler in Subspace.[4]

The Gatlantis Empire, with the involuntary assistance of captured Garmillan scientists, adapted Gami-loids into much larger and heavily armed war robots called Needleslaves.[9][10] Gami-loids continued to be used aboard the Neu Deusura, Desler's new flagship developed from the Deusura II, during his time in service of Gatlantis.[11][12]
