OutRun is a driving simulator game designed by Yu Suzuki and released by SEGA for the arcades in 1986, available at the Club SEGA arcades.
Description
The objective of the game is to drive a Ferrari Testarossa with the driver's girlfriend through five courses that branch out to a total of five different goals. It is well known for its high difficulty (other cars in traffic are immovable objects), non-linear gameplay, and selectable tropical Synthwave soundtrack.
In Yakuza
OutRun appeared for the first time in Yakuza 0 as part of the games available at the SEGA HI-TECH LAND. It takes an important role in certain substories like gaining the friendship of Luka, which allows Kazuma Kiryu to later on purchase the arcade for his Real Estate company. Also, as part of the Real Estate Royale, Kiryu must defeat the Electronics King in a score battle of OutRun, wagering 10% of the property area.
OutRun reappeared once again in Yakuza 6 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon, though this time, the game has no role in the substories' plot. In the remastered version of Judgment, the Yagami Detective Agency has an OutRun cabinet, replacing the pinball table from the original release.
Trivia
Due to licensing issues with Ferrari, the appearance of OutRun has been modified in the emulated version within the Yakuza universe, changing the characteristic design of the Ferrari Testarossa's rear stoplights and removing the prancing stallion logo. Also other traffic cars like the Porsche 911, the Chevrolet Corvette or the Volkswagen Beetle were modified as well to remove trademark appearances.
