Fumiya Sugiura

SPOILER WARNING: Plot details for Judgment follow. (Skip)

Fumiya Sugiura (杉浦 文也, Sugiura Fumiya), real name Fumiya Terasawa (寺澤 文也, Terasawa Fumiya), is a supporting character featured in Judgment and Lost Judgment and a minor character in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. He is a former thief and an investigator at Yokohama 99.

Profile

Appearance

Sugiura's hair and eyebrows are dyed light brown; his hair is medium-length, straight, and parted off-center. Prior to becoming a thief, Sugiura had long black hair. Suguira's face is often described as "handsome" by others, most notably by Akane.

Sugiura is also noted to be quite athletic, being able to parkour more easily than even Takayuki Yagami.

Attire

Sugiura signature attire consists of a black denim jacket over a white hoodie with a black inner hood, black sweatpants, and a pair of black and white high-top canvas sneakers. Prior to becoming a thief, Sugiura wore a brown sweater, blue jeans, and glasses. Even after his days as a thief, Sugiura continues to wear his jester mask, typically into fights.

While posing as a taxi driver, Sugiura wears a standard taxi driver's outfit, consisting of a blue vest over white shirt, blue cap, gray pants, and white gloves.

While boxing, Sugiura wears a white hoodie similar to his signature hoodie. He also wears red boxing gloves, black and white athletic shorts, black compression leggings, and black and white low top sneakers.

Personality

Sugiura is a cocky and energetic person, commonly inserting quips into conversation. He is persistent and determined, and his devious nature makes the two a dangerous combo. He will see things through to the end even if it means putting himself in harm's way.

His initial distrust of Yagami ends up getting the better of him, and he is prone to outbursts, especially when Shinpei Okubo or Emi Terasawa are involved. After the truth behind Emi's death is revealed and justice is served, he becomes far more agreeable.

Making good use of his time as a thief, Sugiura uses trickery and redirection in fights, taking full advantage of the enemy's confusion in order to create an opening.

While he doesn't mind hanging around with smokers, he is not a smoker himself as he dislikes Masaharu Kaito for stinking up his van in confined spaces.[6]

Background

Prior to his sister's death, Sugiura was a shut-in, but came to resent Yagami for proving Okubo innocent. Fueled by grief and hatred, Sugiura turned to a life of crime, determined to get back at the society that had wronged him and to live for himself as opposed to others.

He and his parents met with Yagami prior to Okubo's second trial, with Sugiura himself claiming that Yagami was just as guilty as the murderer he'd gotten acquitted. Due to his glasses and long hair that obscured his face, Yagami was not able to recognize him when they met again 3 years later.

He joined up with a group of masked thieves, though ended up leaving the group due to fellow leader Crow's conflicting ideals.

Involvement

Judgment: 2018-2019

While running from the police, Sugiura encounters Takayuki Yagami and steals his phone, causing Yagami to chase him; part of his plan to distract the police and allow an easy escape. Yagami follows him across the rooftops, but loses his footing and nearly falls, only to be caught by Sugiura. He returns Yagami's phone and runs off. He admits later that he had not expected Yagami to keep up with him.

Sugiura later reveals his face to Kaito and Yagami after rescuing the two of them from Satoshi Shioya and his lackeys, formally joining the group as an ally.

His true identity and motivations are revealed when he accompanies Yagami to find Yoji Shono's secret lab. Sugiura - now revealed to be Emi Terasawa's younger brother, Fumiya Terasawa - pulls out a knife with the intention of killing Shono, the real culprit behind his sister's murder. He is stopped by Yagami and the arrival of the prosecutors, Kunihiko Morita, Keigo Izumida and Mafuyu Fujii, as well as the Vice Minister of Health, Kaoru Ichinose.

Upon their return to Charles, he explains that the real reason he had been tagging along had been to make sure Yagami didn't forget his involvement in Emi's murder by fighting for Okubo's innocent verdict. He had originally meant to discourage Yagami's return to the courtroom, if he ever decided to return to being a defense attorney, but realizes it is no longer necessary after learning the truth.

Sugiura accompanies Yagami to the Advanced Drug Development Center in pursuit of The Mole, where they find Shono being held hostage. He is shot in the stomach by Kuroiwa, which leaves him unable to fight, though he still manages to record the entirety of Shono's AD-9 speech, serving as irrefutable evidence of the ADDC's shady underbelly and the crimes of Shono, Kido and Ichinose.

After the trial, Sugiura visits Okubo at the detention center, and the two reconnect, with Sugiura vowing to visit Emi's grave with him after he is released from prison.

Lost Judgment

In Lost Judgment, Sugiura retains his moveset from the previous game, and can additionally throw rocks at enemies. As a DLC Boxer: He is an out-boxer, utilizing footwork and agility to evade hits, but is vulnerable against hooks.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name

As an arena fighter, Sugiura moveset is watered down and has less moves than before. However, his rock throw is replaced with a smoke grenade that can stun enemies, and also has the ability to quickstep indefinitely.
