Emoto

Emoto[note 2] (柄本) is a recurring character in the Like a Dragon series introduced in Yakuza. He is a doctor and head of the Emoto Medical Clinic based in Kamurocho.

Background

Emoto was formerly the head surgeon at Touto University Hospital.

Involvement

Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami: 2005

Main article: A Doctor's Duty

A young boy is struck down by appendicitis. Kiryu first meets Emoto in this situation, after asking locals for the nearest doctor. A pair of foreigners are outraged that he has prioritized the boy's care above that of their unconscious brother. They think that Emoto is discriminating against them because they're foreigners, and go into the operating theater to try and confront him. Kiryu however, knowing the criticality of the boy's situation, fights them off in order to prevent them from interfering with the operation.

Afterwards, the foreigners tell Emoto that he let their brother die, only for Emoto to hit the unconscious man in the stomach, waking him up. He explains that whilst the boy was only moments away from a possibly fatal burst appendix, the foreigners' brother was merely passing a kidney stone.

Emoto mentions that he loves Kamurocho, because despite hardships, everyone in the city is still trying their best. He insists that he does not discriminate and that he's willing to help anyone who's suffering illness.

When Kiryu thanks Emoto for helping the boy and asks about the medical bill, Emoto says not to worry about it as he has a sponsor. After Kiryu leaves, Emoto receives a briefcase full of cash, and it is revealed that his sponsor is Kazama, who's been a fan of Emoto ever since his days at Touto University Hospital.

Yakuza 2/Yakuza Kiwami 2: 2006

Emoto helps Kazuki and Jiro Kawara after they are shot. While Emoto is operating on Kazuki, two foreign men burst into the operating theater, and Kiryu drags them back out again and fight them off.

Yakuza 3: 2007

Emoto continues caring for Kazuki, who has almost finished recovery. Kiryu leaves Haruka Sawamura in his care as he heads to visit Goro Majima.

Yakuza 4: 2010

Main article: A Doctor's Pledge

Kiryu visits Emoto after recovering a Chinese foreigner from the docks. Emoto takes a look at the man and helps him recover. He stays with the man as Kiryu brings Masayoshi Tanimura over to interpret what the man is saying under his breath. It's revealed he is part of the Snake Flower Triad, and after this, another member of the Triad comes to see the man. Emoto stays with the recovering man after Kiryu and Tanimura fights off the Triad.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth: 2023

Emoto recognizes a homeless man carried to his clinic as one of his regular patients. While he thanks Kiryu's help, he never liked his daughter following his footsteps, let alone taking over clinic. He knew of Kiryu, the man who "died", but plays along with Kiryu keeping his identity a secret. Given the daughter's popularity and urging Emoto to retire, it actually fired him up to stay working until he dies.

Notes

  1. The given height of 185 cm (6′ 1″) is based on the character model's scaling factor within Yakuza Kiwami 2's data.[1] For Dragon Engine games, this method is believed to be very accurate (±2 cm). However, this is intended as an estimate, not a substitute for an official statistic.
  2. In the original Western release of Yakuza, Emoto was renamed to Enomoto.
