The Yggdrasil (ユグドラシル, Yugudorashiru) is name of the ship operated by Bartholomew Fatima and his crew of Sand Pirates. The Yggdrasil is closely tied with Bart's past, as well as the history of the Fatima family line, with the last addition dating back to the founding of Aveh and Kislev.

Yggdrasil I & II

The predecessor of the Yggdrasil I and II date to the reign of King Raganbart I, the first king of Aveh. The official name of the Yggdrasil I was Sigrid, after Raganbart I's betrothed.[2]

While the two ships would have been used in the centuries-long Kislev-Aveh war, when King Edbart Fatima IV's peace talks with Kislev were proving fruitful, the Yggdrasil I and II were instead drydocked.[3] In the following coup d'état by Aveh Minister Shakhan, that resulted in the deaths of most of the Fatima family line, the two ships were lost.

The first Yggdrasil is stolen from Aveh by Sigurd, Maison, and their allies during the raid to rescue Bart and Margie.

The Yggdrasil I includes living quarters, a lounge with a bar, and a Gear Hangar.

After the original Yggdrasil sinks, a second nearly identical ship, the Yggdrasil II, is discovered beneath the sands of the Ignas desert. Capable of moving on water, as well as in sand, the Yggdrasil II allows the party to explore a vastly wider area of the world than previously possible.

The Yggdrasil II is also equipped with special surface-to-air missiles, unsurprisingly dubbed "Bart Missiles" by Bart. Bart uses the "Bart Missiles" to shoot down the Goliath, unaware that his friends are aboard the Kislev airship when he opens fire.

The ship is later pushed to its limits when the party mounts a daring assault against the submerged Sargasso Gate.

Yggdrasil III - Airship

After the party reaches Shevat, the Yggdrasil II is adapted to be able to fly and is renamed to the Yggdrasil III. The attachments that enable the ship to fly were designed by Roni Fatima, Bart's ancestor, and were stored away in Shevat for safe keeping.

With the Yggdrasil now flight capable, it could no longer float in the water or on the sand; however, its operating range had increased dramatically. With the Yggdrasil III in their possession there was literally nowhere on the planet that Bart, Fei and their friends could not go, except Solaris.

Super Dimension Gear Yggdrasil IV

PW034 Ygg4

A large landing assault vessel that originated from the Eldridge, its origin is unrelated to the Yggdrasil series.[4]

Discovered in 9501 on an Ignas battlefield, Roni Fatima had the ancient vessel excavated and ordered his subordinates to begin repairing it, hoping to make use of it for possible upcoming battle with Solaris.[5][6][7]

As the giant vessel was repaired, a small settlement developed around it, eventually expanding into the capital city of Nortune, Kislev. At some point the unnamed vessel was sealed and forgotten, and the site became the center of the Central Administrative District.[7]

When the Yggdrasil III needed to battle Solaris' Mobile Surface Supremacy Weapon, this ancient vessel was integrated into it to become the Super Dimensional Gear Yggdrasil IV. Despite its size and the ability to transform into a Gear, the Yggdrasil IV only needed three people to command it, allowing it to be operated without a large crew on board.[7]

Trivia

  • The Yggdrasil IV is a nod to Super Dimension Fortress Macross. It has a similar design to the Macross, and is introduced in its one and only battle as the Super Dimension Gear Yggdrasil IV. The Yggdrasil IV's head also bears a strong resemblance to the head of the VF-1J piloted by the series protagonist in SDF Macross.

  1. Perfect Works, pg79. (Gear spec conversion table) lists uria as equal to a "m/s" measure. "kahnns/uria"=(tonnes/[m/s]). This number appears to be Xenogears' equivalent to horsepower. Where horsepower is "the unit of power needed to raise 550 pounds one foot in one second" (foot-pound-second or ft-lb/s), this vehicle spec number appears to be "the unit of power needed to raise (?) tonnes one meter in one second" (m-tonne/s]).
