Hammer

I just don’t like the idea of feeding off the dead. I mean, what are we, space jackals? Vultures? Hyenas?
—Hammer, regarding whether they should salvage scrap

Hammer (ハマー, Hamā) is the navigator of the Elsa Von Brabant and has a vast knowledge of the net, and at times his opinion on how to fly the ship clashes with that of Tony, the pilot. Hammer dislikes scavenging the wreckage of starship disasters, such as the wreck of the Woglinde.

Biography

A renowned hacker as a teenager, he got cocky and made a move on a certain criminal organization's database, and became targeted for retribution as a result. Saved by Matthews, their relationship has continued since then. He is the childhood friend of Tony, the helmsman.

Xenosaga

Along with the rest of the Elsa crew, Hammer helps rescue Allen, Cherenkov, and Shion after the Gnosis destroy the Woglinde.

When Cherenkov is attacked on the Dock Colony, Hammer sees the fight from a distance and calls for help.

At the end of the series, Hammer is one of those who embarks on a mission to find Lost Jerusalem, the lost homeland of humanity.

Trivia

  • Hammer built chaos' A.G.W.S. from scrap parts. While Shion gives MOMO and Ziggy a tour of Hangar 1 on the Elsa, MOMO asks about the other A.G.W.S. Shion explains, "Oh, that's the Elsa's A.G.W.S. It seems chaos pilots it for the most part. I heard that Hammer put it together himself from junk parts salvaged from battlefields." MOMO remarks that Hammer is very skilled, and Shion continues: "I think he does all the repairs on the Elsa too. Someone like Hammer's a rare find. There aren't too many people like that, even in Vector Second R&D Division."
  • Hammer's role as a navigator has largely been replaced by advances in technology in Xenosaga's futuristic spaceship setting. Tony asks him, "Why don't you just direct-link it?!" and Hammer replies, "Isn't it obvious?! It's way cooler to navigate by hand!"
  • That said, his skills are still highly sought-after in some circumstances. In Episode II, an NPC outside the Durandal's park area expresses interest in recruiting him for software development.
  • He resembles a non-anthropomorphic animal version of a similar character also named Hammer in Xenogears, known perhaps for his iconic line about his "MAD SKILLZ" [sic].
  • When the Elsa crew shares a meal with Allen and Shion, they discuss how Shion's curry is an improvement over what they usually eat. Hammer's original dialogue,「うちは残酷なまでに男所帯で」, refers to the Elsa crew as 男所帯 (otokojotai), an all-male household.[1][2] His localized English line alters the nuance: "Normally, there’s not even a hint of estrogen on this ship."
