Ley lines are invisible semi-physical channels through which the power of Elemental Planes permeates the material world. They can be up to six meters wide and crisscross the entire planet, able to be found at any altitude, be it a mountain peak or a cavern deep under the sea. Together, they create interconnected web that forms the backbone of magical art in the Continent.
Each ley line is linked to a specific element and has different characteristics. A ley line linked to Earth might be recognized by gnarled trees, prevaled plant growth, or strange rock patterns along the line. One linked to Water can manifest as unusual humidity, unnatural water flow, or extreme tides if one searches for it in the sea. A Fire one is characterized by glaring sunlight, withered plants, or heat haze. Cirrus clouds, dust devils, and smell of ozone indicate an Air ley line. In addition, each line radiates a magical signature that can be sensed by anyone and anything that is capable to perceive magical aura; any person attuned to magic gets a cramp on their ring finger when within 10 meters of the ley; trained mages sense great magical aura and can determine the direction of the line.
Places where two or more ley lines converge are called Intersections. Atop the most potent of these, ancient elves and other peoples erected monuments called places of power or circles of elements that allow a safer way to draw magic.[1]
