Bart

Bart was a troll who served Sigismund Dijkstra in Novigrad. He was originally from Zerrikania, where he guarded camels.

Biography

Bart guarded camels for a Zerrikanian merchant until Dijkstra won him from the merchant in a card game. When Dijkstra returned to the North with Isengrim Faoiltiarna, Bart accompanied them. While Dijkstra was handling personal matters in Oxenfurt and attempting to reconcile with his daughter, Iriana van Troffke, he enlisted the bard Dandelion for help. However, the bard ended up a prisoner on a ship sailing to Kovir. To save him, Bart waded into the Pontar in a shallow area so the ship would collide with him and begin taking on water. The plan succeeded, with the ship hitting Bart's head and taking on water. After Isengrim rescued Dandelion and retrieved Bart, the troll followed the river back to Dijkstra.[1]

Later, Bart became the guard for Dijkstra's "members-only savings club" located beneath the bathhouse. He was also tasked with disposing of bodies Dijkstra wanted to eliminate, which he would eat. One day, Bart heard a loud boom near the vault. Investigating, he discovered that a hole had been blown into the wall and thieves had stolen the fortune. Bart gave chase but, due to exposure to toxic pops' mold, his head started to hurt, forcing him to return to the vault. Upset at his failure to protect Dijkstra's treasure, Bart repeatedly banged his head against the wall to stop thinking about it. When Dijkstra enlisted the help of Geralt of Rivia, Bart recounted what he knew about the break-in.

When Dijkstra brought Philippa Eilhart to his bathhouse and released her from the Dimeritium that prevented her from returning to her human form, she attacked him and the gang members present. She fled through the underground vault, casting a spell on Bart to stop anyone from pursuing her. Not long after, Geralt arrived in pursuit of Philippa and encountered Bart.

If Geralt reasoned with Bart: Geralt reasoned with the mind-controlled troll, explaining that he was trying to help Philippa and prevent her from being hurt. Not wanting Philippa to come to harm, Bart allowed Geralt to pass.

If Geralt told Bart to get out of the way: In his haste to reach Philippa, Geralt ordered Bart to move aside. Under Philippa's spell, Bart could not allow this, and the two fought, resulting in Bart's death.

Journal entry

Bart, the troll guarding Dijkstra's treasure, could have been the poster boy for the latest craze among Novigrad's wealthy strata, a trend that had swept over everyone from bankers and merchants to underworld crime bosses. The fashion in question prized guards marked not just by fierce loyalty, but also by massive size, endless stamina and crushing physical strength. A well-developed intellect, on the other hand, was considered unnecessary and quite possibly detrimental to the guard's performance. To be blunt, a good watchman should be brainless enough to render any thought of betraying his master impossible.
That is why trolls, ogres and, as a last result, magic crossbreeds were highly prized for such roles.
