Jacob

"I've seen a lot more of the pond than you, so listen to me when I say no good will come from following me."
—Jacob to Ah Sahm[src]

Jacob was Penelope Blake's loyal manservant. He served her faithfully up until his death after being hanged by a group of Irishmen for having killed Mayor Blake in defense of Penelope.

Biography

Attacked by the O'Sheas

Jacob and Penny stop by a shop in Chinatown to puck up some items, during which time Ah Sahm and Young Jun arrive to hassle the shop keep for their weekly fee. Penny tells them to leave the elderly man alone, forcing Jacob to apologize for her and explain to Penny that they should leave, as she's talking to dangerous men. However, they are confronted on their way home by Seamus and Paul O'Shea. The two Irishmen instigate a fight, and when Penny tries to leave, Paul restrains her while Seamus attacks Jacob. Ah Sahm intervenes, taking out both Paul and Seamus with fairly little effort. Unfortunately for Ah Sahm, all Sergeant O'Hara sees is a Chinese man attacking citizens. He hits Ah Sahm over the head with his baton and arrests him.[1]

Jacob takes Ah Sahm to see Penny but warns him that no good will come from it.[2]

Jacob informs Penny that Ah Sahm will be fighting in a duel.[3]

The destruction of Mercer Steel

Jacob arrives at Mercer Steel to find what remains following an explosion, likely caused by Dylan Leary. He approaches Penny and reveals that there were boxes of opium hidden in the storeroom, as well as Hop Wei bodies, which he gets rid of before the police arrive.[4]

Lynched for the death of Mayor Blake

Jacob arrives at the mayor's estate to find Mayor Blake sitting on top of Penny and choking her. As Penny struggles for air, Jacob sneaks up from behind and bashes him over the back of the head with an iron poker, killing Blake almost instantly.[5]

With Blake dead on the floor, Jacob questions what they should do, as they obviously can't tell the police the truth. They won't care that he was acting in Penny's defense when they learn he killed the Mayor of San Francisco. So, Penny gives Jacob all the money she has and tells him to catch the first train to San Jose, which comes every morning. After fleeing the mayor's estate, Jacob returns to Chinatown, where his ill mother lays in bed. He tells her that he has to leave for a while and leaves some money under her pillow. The following morning, on his way to the train station, he is cornered in by the increased police presence, trapping him in Chinatown, and forcing him to take shelter in the basement of a shop, where he remains for the day as the police continue their search. However, he flees after the police search the home and breaks into Chao's shop.

Jacob pleads with Chao for help and even offers to pay. Chao warns Jacob that they won't let up until he's caught or dead. His best bet is across the salt. Chao intends to do this by putting Jacob in the coffin and shipping him back to China along with the rest of the dead. Unfortunately for Jacob, on the ride to the port, he is captured by the San Francisco police department and placed in the paddy wagon. However, on route to the police station, their path is blocked by an angry mob, who force their way inside the carriage and drag Jacob out, beating him mercilessly before hanging him outside of the Banshee.[6]
