Haki

Haki, also known as "Ambition", "Presence", "Spirit", "Aura", and many more names, is an energy system found in is present within every living creature in the One Piece world. It is a power that allows people to utilize their spiritual energy for various purposes. Most people go their entire lives without ever having knowledge that they possess Haki, and if they do find out, they rarely succeed in making use of it. For the people that unlock Haki through intense trauma or training, they are not guaranteed to be able to use all three types of Haki. Usually a person will specialize in one type of Haki while possibly being able to use the other two.[1] Due to the fact that Haki originates from an individual's spirit and not their physical body, users are still capable of using it even if their spirit is transferred into another body.[2] The Color of Observation and the Color of Arms are called by different names in different regions and are applied in many martial arts. There are also those who combine it with the power of the devil's fruit to sublimate the power of their supremacy even more powerfully. The mastery of Mantra and Rokushiki is achieved through training similar to the training of the Haki.[3]

Ways of acquiring Haki[4]

  • Training: When a person trains repeatedly, their greatest hidden potential may be unleashed. Self-confidence and actual fighting experience are factors that are necessary to achieve this.
  • Natural Talent: Some aspects of Haki require the user to be born with the inherent talent. The greater the hidden power, the more likely it is for the user to use it unconsciously.
  • During Fighting: When a person is placed in fights where the mind and body are pushed to the limits, abilities that lay dormant may be awakened suddenly. Training is needed in order for the user to manipulate Haki at ease.

Haki can grant many abilities as seen below:

  • Reactive Power Level: Haki can become stronger in combat, especially against powerful foes.[5]
    • Over the course of his battle with Charlotte Katakuri, Monkey D. Luffy was able to increase the proficiency of his Observation Haki to the point where he could see into the future.[6]
    • Against Kaidou, Luffy was also able to increase the proficiency of his Conqueror's Haki to where he could infuse his attacks with it.[7]
    • Rayleigh has said that fighting users with superior Haki allows one to temper and improve their Haki in the heat of battle.[5]
  • Accelerated Development: People can learn Haki or gain more advanced Haki in dangerous situations.[4]
    • Monkey D. Luffy learned how to use Armament Haki's internal destruction because Hyogoro's explosive collar was about to detonate,[8] while he was unable to learn even a lower level, though still advanced, Armament Haki technique while actively trying training to awaken it.[9]
    • Koby learned how to use Observation Haki via being surrounded by combat.[10]

Kenbunshoku Haki, also known as Kenbun, Observation Haki, Color of Observation, or Mantra, is one of the two most common shades of Haki. It provides a sort of sixth sense to the user, allowing them to sense the presence of others even if they are concealed from view or too far away to see normally. Every living creature emits a "voice", and Kenbunshoku is capable of listening to that voice, providing them with abilities based on reading said voice.[11] It can also provide certain other abilities beyond just enhancing the senses. Known as the ability of perception, it allows the user to sense the presence of living things and emotional changes surrounding them.[1] It is not used only in fights but is effective in helping the user foresee dangers and evade them.

There are three main uses for Kenbunshoku Haki. One is reading the opponent's mind, or more specifically a surface version of it, allowing a user to sense their next move. Another is grasping the positions of surrounding living objects without actually seeing them. With more skill and precision, users can sense the strength levels of opponents. The final ability is to sense the emotions of others, whether it be hidden sadness, anger, joy, and others.[4] Some users can combine this ability with other abilities. Enel is capable of combining his Kenbunshoku Haki with his Goro Goro no Mi, allowing him to read electric signals.[12] It can be used while unconscious, as Whitebeard used the ability even when asleep.[13]

  • Initial Stage: Haki users in this class have the ability to activate Observation Haki, but with no control on the activation of the ability. Without willing it, they can constantly sense the emotions of several people around them, but they cannot effectively utilize or disable the ability. When the ability to sense those emotions is too strong, the Haki user may also be overly affected by such emotions.[14] Some users like Koby were traumatized by the extreme levels of emotions flowing into his brain.[10] This level of proficiency is not ideal in scenarios of potent death and sadness, as users can constantly sense the last thoughts and the despair of unfortunate people around them.
    • Examples include Aisa, Usopp as of Dressrosa, and Koby as of Pre-Timeskip.
  • Intermediate Stage: Haki users of this stage are capable of using all of the capabilities of Kenbunshoku Haki. They are able to read minds whenever they choose to, and can hear the inner voices of others whenever they wish. They can read the intent of attacks from others, allowing them to easily dodge.[15] They are capable of using this ability with their eyes closed.[16][17] They can sense the emotions of others around them as well.[17][18] Many users are capable of sensing the strength levels of others, like when Rayleigh sensed that there were 500 creatures on Rusukaina stronger than Luffy.[1] They are able to stretch out the range of their abilities to sense things at a far distance, usually spanning over several kilometers.[11] They can actively sense the presence and aura of others within their proximity, and occasionally have premonitions of the very brief future.[15]
    • Examples include Luffy as of Post-Timeskip, Enel and his vassals, and Zoro as of Post-Timeskip.
  • Advanced Stage: Haki users in this class go far beyond what is typically seen with Kenbunshoku Haki. Some users can feel the flow of their target's attack pattern and how they will respond to attack, even going as far as to know their mental state and intentions to a near perfect understanding.[6]Other users can also perform active precognition--seeing events transpiring at least several seconds before they occur.[19]

Powers and Abilities

Initial Stage

  • Precognition and Extrasensory Perception (Precognition, Enhanced Sight, Life Detection; Can sense the life energy in others, seeing if they are alive and when they die[11])
  • Telepathy (Can read the minds of others, hearing their voices and thoughts[11])
  • Statistics Amplification (Able to amplify their senses and react to things much faster than their base reactions[20][21][22])
  • Enhanced Senses
    • Enhanced Awareness (Can sense those near the user[10])
    • Enhanced Hearing (Can hear the conversations of peoples kilometers away[10])
    • Enhanced Vision (Users in training like Enel's vassals are shown to see kilometers away,[11] and Aisa could do the same at birth.[14] More potent Kenbunshoku allows the user to see much further into the future)
      • Aura Vision (Can see the auras of others[23])
      • X-Ray Vision (Can look through walls to see the aura of others[23])
      • Panoramic Vision (Their Haki is omnidirectional, allowing them to see all around them[11])
      • Emotion Vision (Regularly sense the emotions and feelings of others[10])
      • Soul Vision (Rayleigh said that Haki can see spiritual energy,[10] and Usopp said that he could see spirits[23])
  • Clairvoyance and Limited Cosmic Awareness (Visual Linking; Can see through the eyes of others in other dimensions[24])

Intermediate Stage

  • Information Analysis and Extrasensory Perception (Power Reading; Can sense the power levels of opponents[10][25])
  • Enhanced Senses
    • Enhanced Vision
      • Neutral Vision (Can see Haki, which is invisible[10])
    • Enhanced Sixth (Get small glimpses into the future[15][11][1])
  • Instinctive Reaction (Kin'emon can sense and fight even without connection to his other senses, as his legs and torso moved around Punk Hazard using only his Kenbunshoku Haki and not any others.[26][27][28] Big Mom and Whitebeard can sense and fight while they're sleeping.[29][30] Rayleigh said that Luffy could unconsciously sense the emotions of living things[6])

Advanced Stage

  • Precognition (Much more potent than before. Can see many seconds into the literal future[19][6])

Weaknesses

  • In order to fully utilize Observation Haki, the user must remain focused and calm, otherwise the ability's effectiveness becomes dulled or even negated.[31]
  • The user, if imperfect with seeing the future, can not predict what will happen if they change their actions to respond to a predicted enemy attack. This also becomes prominent when even an advanced user is against an opponent with comparable or even superior levels of precognition, such as when Luffy could dodge Katakuri's attacks early in their fight.
  • Users, while capable of seeing the attack coming, are less likely to evade or defend against an attack if it is too fast for them to see or keep up with[32][33]
  • Users cannot sense non living things unless they are used by living things to harm others. Luffy can sense water being thrown at him but Kin'emon couldn't sense his passive surroundings.[26][27][28]
  • Users are capable of running out of Kenbunshoku Haki,[5] although it takes a long time, as Katakuri could go eleven hours using its most advanced version without it running out.
  • Although users are capable of discerning emotion and intent to a great degree in people, they can still be fooled by superb acting skills, such as Luffy and Sanji being completely fooled by Pudding.

Busoshoku Haki, also known as Buso, Armament Haki, Color of Armaments, or Ryuo, is one of the two most common shades of Haki. It allows the user to manipulate their own spiritual energy to create, in essence, an invisible armor around themselves in order to amplify their strength and durability. This color of Haki is the direct counter to Devil Fruit abilities, allowing them to harm Logias with elemental intangibility and Paramecias with special blunt force-negating bodies, negate resistances, and even resist Devil Fruit abilities. It is referred to as an "invisible armor" that grows in strength as the user's Haki grows in potency.[1] More potent Buso allows people to affect those who can resist abilities from weaker Buso users.[34] It can be used while unconscious, as Chinjao used the ability even when knocked out.[35]

  • Initial Stage: Haki users at this stage are capable of using Busoshoku Haki at its basic levels, where they can strengthen their body by covering themselves with the invisible armor.[36] They can generate this armor and utilize its ability to resist Devil Fruit powers, most notably being able to touch Logias. Unlike the other colors, this is not an initial stage of a Haki shade that works uncontrollably, and the user knows that they're using it.
  • Intermediate Stage: Haki users at this stage are capable of utilizing "Busoshoku: Koka", also known as "Hardening" which makes the invisible armor now visible, and it covers the user in a black colored coating which is much more potent than the invisible Haki. Particularly strong concentrations of Busoshoku in a body part will cause the edges of the coating to take the shape of flames.[37][38][39] Users are shown to infuse Busoshoku: Koka into other objects, like swords,[40] bullets,[41] and even bamboo sticks[34] and Devil Fruit abilities.[42] Users can turn incredibly weak things into very strong weapons, like a bamboo stick into a deadly weapon,[34] or giving regular arrows the power to break through stone.[43] If a projectile weapon is imbued with Haki, the projectile will remain hardened even after it is launched away from the user's body.[43] Several users of Busoshoku: Koka are able to coat their entire bodies in Haki,[34][40][44] although this is noted to be rare. Swordsmen are known to create "Black Blades", or Kokuto, by using Koka over a sword, which makes the sword much more durable.[45] This can go another level, creating permanent black blades, via using Koka on a sword over a long period of time, which makes the sword much more durable. This "forging" process seems to happen specifically because of consistent Armament Haki usage,[46] and Black Blades are some of the most durable weapons in existence because of it. In addition to becoming nigh-indestructible, Black Blades automatically move up a grade rank when they are forged as such.[47]
  • Advanced Stage: Haki users at this stage are capable of using Busoshoku Haki to the best of its ability. Outside of them being capable of imbuing it into other objects, they are also capable of projecting it out of their bodies.[1] This can be used to physically attack people with close ranged attacks without making direct contact, can be thrown forwards like an energy blast,[1] and can be used to deflect or at least block the force of attacks.[48][16][49] It's implied to be far stronger than the previous stages in its energy output, as Luffy thought he could bypass Kaidou's scales just by learning this type of Haki.[46] They are capable of combining the emission and infusion aspects of their Haki as well.[50]
  • Beyond Advanced Stage: Haki users at this stage are capable of using Busoshoku Haki beyond the level of advanced users. They can inject Haki into a person or object, leading to said person or object's destruction from the inside,[46] which can be done by touching,[1] grabbing,[51] or even emitting Haki toward the object.[46] It wrecks tremendous amounts of internal damage to the victim. Things that the user usually cannot destroy can be harmed from the inside, and in three separate instances, Rayleigh and Luffy were shown using this to rip off exploding collars and cuffs fast enough to throw them aside before they detonated.[52][8][53][51]

Powers and Abilities

Initial Stage

Intermediate Stage

  • Devil Fruit Negation (Intense enough Haki can counteract and negate Devil Fruit abilities, seen when Trafalgar Law negated the effects of the Feminization Disease from the Sick-Sick Fruit[63])
  • Transmutation (Over time, the more a swordsman uses Buso in a specific blade, there is a chance that the weapon can be turned into a Black Blade[46])

Advanced Stage

Beyond Advanced Stage

Weaknesses

  • Busoshoku Haki doesn't strengthen the insides of the user's body, allowing them to be susceptible to internal attacks.[64]
  • Users are capable of running out of Busoshoku Haki, and using it on more body parts drains it faster.[37]
  • Enemies with superior Busoshoku can overpower the Haki of others.[40]
  • Superior Busoshoku Haki does not guarantee victory even in a physical brawl if the opponent the user is facing possesses a wide enough advantage in raw strength.[31]
  • They can only negate the elemental intangibility of those with real bodies and not living elements.[65]

Haoshoku Haki, also known as Hao, Conqueror's Haki, or Color of the Supreme King, is the rarest of the three types of Haki, as only one in several million people are born with this type of haki. Stated to be the manifestation of the spirit, this is an ability used to manipulate the user's own willpower and killing intention in the form of an aura burst, allowing them to dominate the willpower of their enemies. This effect is capable of rendering surrounding people unconscious, and even those heavily resistant to its effects are exposed to the killing intent of the user. Animals are much more vulnerable to this ability, as not only do they also fall unconscious, but they can be subdued and tamed by the users.[1] Unlike the other two Haki types, Haoshoku cannot be gained or improved through training. One is either born with it, or they are not.[1] Stated to be proof of a candidate chosen by Heaven,[66] it is gained by characters having the qualities of a King,[16] requiring the greatest ambitions, whether striving to become the best in the world at something, or having the goal of earning a significant position. Many Haoshoku Haki users have shown to have a highly respected status alongside their Haki as well. The only way for this ability to grow is by strengthening the user's mind and body, and the potency of Haoshoku will grow alongside the user. It can also be used while unconscious, as Luffy used the ability even when knocked out.

  • Initial Stage: Haki users at this stage are capable of using Haoshoku Haki in specific moments, usually when the user is under heavy stress and/or experiencing intense emotions. In its initial stage, the user is not aware that they possess this ability, and cannot control it.[16] As users are not aware of the ability and also fire it off indiscriminately at this stage, they usually affect everyone in their immediate area.[67] If people around the user possess weak enough willpower, they will collapse en masse upon activation of the ability.[68][1][4]
  • Intermediate Stage: Haki users at this stage are capable of using Haoshoku Haki at will after exponential growth in mind and body. The user is capable of manipulating the timing of use, the intensity, and even the area of effect of the Haki's power. In a battle against many, this power is able to be used with great effect.[1] When two Haoshoku users clash, they create streaks of black lightning.[69][66] The force of a Haoshoku clash can create shockwaves, and long term effects are detrimental to surroundings.[70]
  • Advanced Stage: Haki users at this stage are capable of using Haoshoku Haki to the best of its ability. This is the rarest level of Haoshoku Haki shown, as Kaidou has stated that "only a handful" of the already very few Haoshoku users in the world are capable of using it. They are able to infuse the aura of Haoshoku Haki into their weapons, allowing them to produce stronger attacks.[50] These users have such potent control of this color to the point where different qualities of the intermediate stage are multiplied in effect. The black lightning produced by Haoshoku clashes is now produced from the weapons of users even without another user being present.[59][7] The shockwaves produced are much more potent, allowing them to split the sky in half and to push clouds away from their pressure alone.[71][72][50][7][73][74] Backgrounds are shown to become cloudy and dark whenever an advanced Haoshoku user is angry.[71][75] Pressure from their Haki is potent enough to where they can slightly destroy their surroundings just by shooting their Haki out,[71] even without needing to clash with someone else. The domination effect is passive, allowing users to knock out weak willed enemies in their surroundings without them even knowing just by infusing their weapons.[76][77] Further potent emotions allow the user's Haki to grow in strength, shown when a drunk Kaidou's Haki grows in potency as a byproduct of his rapidly changing emotions.[78]
  • Beyond Advanced Stage: Haki users at this stage are capable of using Haoshoku Haki beyond the level of advanced users. Utilizing the "Observation Killing" ability, they can negate the enemy's ability to predict and see into the future, and this technique is usually used against Kenbunshoku Users.

Powers and Abilities

Initial Stage

  • Willpower Manipulation, Explosive Aura Burst, and Shockwave Creation (Users of this Haki are capable of manipulating their willpower into a large aura which shoots out in all directions, causing shockwaves to occasionally push others backwards and destroy the surroundings[16])
  • Fear-Inducing Aura, Status Effect Inducement, Empathic and Fear Manipulation (By directly dominating the willpower of opponents, victims often fall unconscious and are extremely shaken by this Haki, and even those who aren't are still slightly scared.[68][67][1][4] Boa Marigold and Sandersonia obeyed Luffy's command of not harming the petrified warriors.[16] Those with barely enough willpower black out for a small period of time and get mild headaches[52])
  • Animal Manipulation (Animals are more susceptible to Haoshoku Haki, capable of being tamed or shaken in fear[79][80][1][81][82])
  • Sleep Manipulation (Those who fall victim to this Haki are capable of falling unconscious due to the effects, whether it's human beings or animals[79][16][80][67][1][81][82][68])
  • Empowerment (It's empowered by the user's willpower and its strengthened by personal growth.[1] Haoshoku is awakened by people bringing out strong emotions,[16] and Kaidou's Haoshoku Infusion was more potent when he had heightened emotions while being drunk[78])

Intermediate Stage

Advanced Stage

Beyond Advanced Stage

  • Precognition Negation (Users of this Haki can prevent an opponent from being able to predict the future[83])
  • All the abilities under Kenbunshoku Haki Negation

Weaknesses

  • Initial stage users are at risk of affecting innocent bystanders and those who they do not wish to effect.[4]
  • Those with sufficient willpower are capable of managing to slightly stay conscious against the effects of Haoshoku Haki, usually getting headaches.[52]
    • Those with even stronger willpower are capable of completely ignoring its effects.[68]
