Voord

The Voord or Voords are the main antagonists of the Doctor Who story "The Keys of Marinus". This is their only on-screen appearance, although they have made other appearances in other media.

History

The Voord were a group of creatures from Marinus, led by Yartek. They found a way to resist the Conscience of Marinus, a machine that compelled the population to obey the law. The Conscience's creator, Arbitan, planned to reprogramme it to overcome their resistance and sent the First Doctor and his companions Susan, Ian and Barbara to retrieve the control Keys. The Voord attacked the island where the Conscience was located and killed Arbitan, intending to use the control Keys to gain control of the Conscience and control the population. Ian gave Yartek a fake Key, which caused the Conscience to explode when used.

In the audio play "Domain of the Voord", the Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara encountered the Voord again when they invaded the planet Hydra and inspired a rebellion against them. The First Doctor also encountered them in the annual story "The Fishmen of Kandalinga", where they had invaded the planet Kandalinga and enslaved the population. The Doctor again managed to free their slaves.

In the comic strip "The World Shapers", the Sixth Doctor, Peri and Frobisher, together with old friend Jamie, visited Marinus and discovered the Voord in the process of evolving into the Cybermen. They had developed a world shaper machine which Jamie sacrificed himself to destroy.

In another audio story, "Beachhead", the Eighth Doctor, Liv and Helen discovered a Voord ship that had crashlanded on Earth in the 21st century. The crew attempted to force them to recharge the ship but the Doctor caused them to become trapped inside, to eventually die.

In the IDW comic strip "Four Doctors", the Voord attempted to alter history so an alternate version of the Twelfth Doctor would become their leader but were defeated by the regular Twelfth Doctor along with his tenth and eleventh incarnations.
