Tribesmen

Cortex: How I envy the simple life of the tribesfolk...
~ Dr. Neo Cortex in Crash Twinsanity.

Tribesmen are an organization appearing as recurring antagonists in the Crash Bandicoot franchise.

They are an unnamed tribe of native residents of N. Sanity Island who are mostly unconcerned about the events around them, but are prone to attacking both Crash Bandicoot and Neo Cortex if they happen to trespass on their territory.

History

Past

It's unknown how long the tribe has been around, but its presence on N. Sanity Island certainly predates Cortex's and N. Brio's. At some point, Papu Papu became the tribe's chief.

Crash Bandicoot (1996)

In his quest to save Tawna, Crash trespassed into the village, causing the tribesmen to attack him. Crash defeated Papu Papu and escaped the natives' village.

CTR: Crash Team Racing

The tribe's chief Papu Papu took part in the racing tournament and was the keeper of the first of the four Boss Keys. He raced the player character, but lost and gave up the key.

Crash Twinsanity

Crash encountered a few tribesmen while following Neo Cortex disguised as Coco. Later, when Cortex bumped into Papu Papu, he was taken prisoner by the natives and tied to a totem pole in their village. Crash rescued Cortex and got the Power Crystal from the totem pole, and Papu Papu ordered the tribesmen to attack the bandicoot for it, with the mutant escaping them once more.

Crash uses the assistance of Capu Capu and their boat to travel between N. Sanity Island and the Iceberg Lab in the game. Capu Capu is shown to be a human native in the game's concept art, but whether he is part of Papu Papu's tribe is unknown.

Skylanders: Imaginators

Numerous tribesmen appear in the Crash Bandicoot-themed level "Thumpin' Wumpa Islands". This time, they don't act hostile, and some of them assist the player in their quest to stop Fake Crash from ruining Wumpa Island with bad vibes created by Cortex Matrix Chamber.

Crash Bandicoot: On the Run!

Despite their village making an appearance, tribesmen don't return in this game, due to Uka Uka having scared them away.

Overview

The tribesmen live in an unindustrialized society, lacking any modern accommodations. Their houses and boats are wooden, although they are not completely unfamiliar with technology, as Papu Papu can drive a racing kart flawlessly. The tribesmen speak their own language, but some members know English as well. One known part of their diet are Warthogs. The presence of a totem in their village indicates that the tribesmen follow a religion.

Trivia

  • In the early Crash Bandicoot bible, Aku Aku was described as a member of the tribe. In Crash Bash, his brother Uka Uka calls Papu Papu an "old friend", hinting that the tribe and the Aku-Uka brothers are still connected somehow.
    • In the development bible, Cortex also claims that the Wumpa Islands are inhabited by cannibals. Beyond a possible brief implication in Twinsanity, nothing indicates that Papu Papu's tribe practices cannibalism.
  • Skylanders: Imaginators is the only game to date where tribesmen appear as allies rather than enemies.
