Todd Fang is a major antagonist in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World.

Todd Fang was a foot soldier in the military of the Holy Empire of Volakia who was engaged to the minor Volakian noblewoman Katya Aurélie. Though outwardly charming, Fang was actually a ruthless and cunning opportunist who was willing to do anything to survive and improve his personal lot in life. He was also highly suspicious of others, stopping at nothing to eliminate anyone he viewed as a threat.

Appearance

Todd Fang was a young man with light skin who had a slim build and stood at five feet and eleven inches tall. He had green eyes and short orange hair that was trimmed into a bowl cut with bangs that partially covered his face and reached down to his nose. Fang's canine teeth were noticeably sharp, denoting his mixed blood heritage.

Personality

While Todd initially appeared as a friendly and cooperative individual, he quickly revealed himself to be a cunning, ruthless, and manipulative character. He will stop at nothing to achieve his goals, even resorting to heinous acts such as poisoning and murder. He views himself as superior to others and is not above manipulating even his closest allies to get what he wants.  He even went so far as to stab Subaru in the shoulder when he didn't like Subaru's gaze and correctly concluded that Subaru was trying to deceive him. Even though he originally seemed kind towards Subaru, it was revealed that Todd had always been suspicious of him from the moment they met. Todd's ruthless nature is further illustrated by his willingness to test a poisonous Demon Beast on fellow soldiers to avoid repercussions, as well as his horrific acts in the Imperial City of Guaral, where he brutally slaughtered innocent civilians in numerous failed loops, targeting Subaru's life each time. Despite his cruel nature, Todd is also sharp-witted and observant, able to quickly pick up on the intentions of others and respond accordingly.

Todd has confessed to Subaru that he acts out of fear on occasion. Whenever he finds himself in a disadvantageous position, Todd's instinct is to flee out of cowardice or not act at all, as seen in his initial attempt to escape Guaral after it was seized. Nevertheless, Todd tries to exude confidence externally to uphold the Empire's ways, even when he is inherently scared. Subaru has judged Todd to be similar to the Witch Cult's Sin Archbishops. Todd's main objective is to safely return home to his fiancée, Katya, whom he perceives as his most valuable treasure and thus, something he must safeguard at all costs. Despite his affection for Katya, Todd finds her to be deeply flawed but loveable "item" nonetheless.

Powers & Abilities

Powers

  • Werewolf Physiology: Todd Fang was a werewolf, a term used for an individual who was the half-blood offspring of a wolf-person and a human. As a result of being a mixed-blood hybrid with a human mother and a demi-human father, Fang inherited traits from his patrilineal line while still having the physical appearance of a full-blooded human.
    • Bestial Transformation
      • Superhuman Strength
    • Superhuman Senses: As a result of his mixed-blood heritage, several of Fang's senses were heightened to a level that far surpassed those of ordinary humans. His eyesight was so sharp that he could see relatively small subjects such as people in detail from the other side of a city. His sense of smell was similarly superhuman, allowing him to detect and distinguish between the body odours emitted by others and pinpoint said odours from a significant distance away.

Abilities

  • Keen Intellect: The ability that makes Todd so dangerous, is unmistakably his intellect. He is extremely attentive and calculative, always being two steps ahead of both his enemies and allies, which allows him to devise deadly traps and strategies to dispatch his foes without being forced to personally cross weapons with them. One should also mention his mentality as an Imperial soldier–depending on the target's threat, Todd isn't afraid of causing collateral damage. During one failed loop, he sent a rogue dragon carriage zooming down the streets, killing tens of innocents as well as Subaru. In the following loop, he set a pub ablaze, once again killing innocents, just so he could kill Subaru. Todd has been mentioned to easily be able to memorize a place or building's layout and geography by simply being there once. With this skill, Todd is very proficient at infiltrating places he's already been to, and planning ambushes on his own soil.

Equipment

  • Battle Axe: Todd can usually be seen wielding a short battle axe and is stated to be very skilled with it, more-so than the average Imperial Soldier. With it, he is able to swiftly dispatch foes with deadly accuracy and surprising amount of force. Despite perhaps not appearing as menacing as some other soldiers, Todd's proficiency in killing others with his axe is not to be underestimated.
  • Throwing knives: As demonstrated during the Demon Beast ambush, Todd is capable of quickly and accurately throwing knives, even when under heavy pressure.
