Jesus, I mean, you guys do nothing but complain about how you can't stand it here, and then you haven't got the guts just to walk out? I mean, what do you think you are for Christ's sake, crazy or something? You're not! You're no crazier than the average asshole out walkin' around on the streets, and that's it...
~ Randle Patrick McMurphy's most famous line.
But, I tried, didn't I? Goddammit, at least I did that.
~ Randle Patrick McMurphy's second most famous line.
Aw come on, you're not gonna say that now! You're not gonna say that now! You're gonna pull that hen house sh-t!? Now when the vote... the Chief just voted, it was 10 to 9. Now I want that television set turned on right now!
~ Randle Patrick McMurphy's heroic breakdown.

Randle McMurphy is the main protagonist of the infamous psychological thriller One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

He was portrayed by Jack Nicholson, who also played Jack Torrance in The Shining, Daryl Van Horne in The Witches of Eastwick, The Joker in Batman, Colonel Nathan R. Jessup in A Few Good Men, Jimmy Hoffa in Hoffa and Frank Costello in The Departed.

However, McMurphy's status as a villain is questionable, as he protrayed as more of a protagonist than than the conniving, authoritarian mental hospital supervisor Nurse Ratched.

History

Randle McMurphy was sentenced for six months in prison, but he pleaded insanity after he was required to serve his sentence at a work farm. He was convicted of battery, gambling and was now serving a sentence for statutory rape of a 15 year-old girl (who he claims told him she was 18). Randle McMurphy was put inside of a mental hospital, to test if he is mentally sane or not. Inside of the hospital, Randle McMurphy became friends with half of the patients, that saw him as a hero in a way.

Most of the patients have been constantly bored inside of the ward, and Randle McMurphy played cards with them, talked to them, made plans, and hoped to watch a match on TV, but the head nurse Mildred Ratched refused to give them anything they requested. Due to this, the group began imagining that they were watching football, and had fun.

One day, Randle McMurphy ends up bringing the group of patients inside of the hospital's bus. Randle McMurphy drove them to the sea, where they went fishing on a boat. After they got back, the police caught all of them, and brought them back to the hospital. They have given Randle McMurphy electroconvulsive therapy, but it did nothing to him.

One night, McMurphy and his Indigenous friend Chief attempt escape the hospital, but, all of the inmates, including McMurphy have too much fun in the hospital, so they fall asleep after a night of heavy drinking and partying. Billy one of the patients, had intercourse with a prostitute in the hospital, that Randle McMurphy got. However, Mildred Ratched finds out and tells Billy that she will have to report him to his mother. This upsets Billy, and Billy ends up committing suicide.

After all of this went down, Randle McMurphy lost his calm, and attacked Mildred Ratched, trying to choke her to death. However, a medical staff member jumped and pushed Randle McMurphy away. As punishment, Randle McMurphy has been lobotomized. Randle McMurphy's best friend that's Indigenous, Chief hugs Randle McMurphy tearfully and smothers him to death with a pillow, so Randle McMurphy won't have to suffer anymore. Due to Chief's anger and misery, Chief ends up breaking the window and running away, with Taber and other inmates cheering him on, finally being free.
