Pockets

I’ve been bowing to others my entire life. And now, everyone will bow to me.
~ Pockets's most famous quote as he betrays Mr. Wang by sending him to fall to his death.
Well, at least you'll make a good statue in my office. (attempts to punch Din, but Long gets in the way, causing Long to turn into gold. While Pockets was distracted, Din seizes the opportunity to kick Pockets off of Long, causing Pockets to accidentally touch himself) No! (screaming as he continues falling while turning into gold)
~ Pockets attempting to turn Din into gold before Long sacrifices himself to save Din, also Pockets' last words before his death.

Pockets is the main antagonist of Sony Pictures Animation's 25th feature film Wish Dragon.

He is Din's arch-nemesis and a bounty hunter who will do anything to get what he is supposed to retrieve, later betraying his employer Mr. Wang to have the magic teapot for himself.

He was voiced by Aaron Yoo.

Appearance

Pockets is a thin Asian man who always has his hands in his pockets, except for the last battle. He has a bald head and a white coat with a white shirt and a golden tie. After becoming Long's master, he wishes for his left hand to be golden.

Personality

Pockets is a self-absorbed man who would do anything to defeat his enemy. He never quits his work and always wins. He rarely takes anything comically like his comrades, barley lightens his serious facade, and above all, refuses to remove his hands from his pockets (hence his nickname), as he prefers to fight with his legs. He is immensely serious and tough, showing a dark side without missing a step and gives off an intimidating aura. He is one of the darker Sony Animation villains due to his will to actually murder both his employer AND original target (who was a teenager) in order to achieve what he wants.

His immense greed also makes him quite foolish as he never take into the account of the consequences of wishing for a Midas Touch, leading to his demise by his own power much like how King Midas suffers in legend.

Biography

Wish Dragon

Pockets is first seen walking out of a van, along with his goons to try and find the Wish Dragon, Long. He beats up some security guards to get past the construction site. He eventually finds a boy named Din Song with the magical teapot and instructs his goons to take it. However, Din wishes for the knowledge to fight and beats up the goons and managed to escape. Pockets returns to his mysterious employer and tells him that they will find Din eventually. During most of the movie, Pockets is seen trying to track down Din, but never finds him.

Eventually, Pockets managed to track Din down at the Pearl Tower with his best friend Li Na. They escape, but end up fighting in a New Year’s parade with Din and Li Na posing as Long as a piñata while Pockets and the goons pose as a lion. However, they managed to escape once again.

When Mr. Wang (who turns out to be Pockets’ employer and Li Na’s father) realizes that the boy he was looking for was Din, he ordered Pockets to take him to him. While Din is trying to make his last wish to Long, Mr. Wang approaches to ask Din for the magic teapot, with Pockets and the Goons behind him, much to Din's horror. While trying to reason with Din, Pockets, out of impatience, pushes Mr. Wang aside and kicks a rock, causing Din to lose the teapot and it falls onto a scaffolding. Both Din and Pockets race for the cup and though Pockets managed to push Din aside, Din knocks Pockets down before he could grab the teapot. Din tells Pockets to stay away from Long, forcing Pockets to use his hands for the first time to fight. During the ensuing fight, Din gets kicked by Pockets, causing him to fall off the scaffolding and into a trash bin. Mr. Wang, while holding on the scaffolding and getting hold of the teapot, berates Pockets for harming Din, but Pockets takes the teapot and betrays Mr. Wang, revealing that he wanted the teapot for his own personal gains rather than serving his employer before kicking him off the construction site, mortally wounding him. Pockets then wishes for the Midas Touch from Long and tests it on the scaffolding, leaving a sad Li Na with her father dying in her arms.

Pockets, along with Tall Goon and Short Goon, then flee the scene. Running out of time, Din uses a crane to jump onto the back of the van as it slowly heads for a bridge. Pockets then tries to attack Din with his Midas Touch several times, but misses (also accidentally punching Short Goon's seat, sending the short man flying out of the van, though his seatbelt is still attached to the van) and causes the van to slowly turn into gold. Din manages to grab the teapot and reunite with Long before Pockets punches the roof, causing Din to drop the teapot and landed near Tall Goon. Pockets continues to punch through the roof in an attempt to turn him into gold, only for Tall Goon to summon Long and wish for a lot of Chow Chow puppies, pulling Pockets up in a pile in the air. Short Goon manages to get the teapot and Pockets tells him not to let Din get it. As the van is almost gold, Pockets, commands Short Goon to wish for something useful, but Short Goon wishes to have longer legs, much to Pockets' annoyance.

The van tires then turn into gold causing the car to fall off the bridge, sending both Din and a screaming Pockets falling out, though they both managed to grab ahold of the teapot and summon Long simultaneously. Pockets orders Long to throw Din off, but the dragon refuses, forcing Pockets to kick Din away from the teapot, making Din unable to see Long. Pockets tries to persuade Din into joining him so they could both be rich, but Din refuses the offer, having learn that money isn't that important and tries to take back the teapot, though Pockets incapacitates him and has him cornered and declares that Din could be a statue for him in his office instead.

Pockets runs towards Din to deliver the final blow and though it seemed Pockets had won as he had seemingly hit Din with an evil smile, Long sacrifices himself to protect Din and puts himself in the way, being the one to turn into gold, much to Pockets' surprise. Angered over Long’s death, Din seizes the opportunity to lunge at Pockets while he was distracted at Long's transformation. Pockets notices this too late as Din kicks him in the arm, causing him to accidentally touch himself and plummet off of Long. While descending, Pockets starts turning into gold and realizes what his wish had gotten him into as he screams while falling and petrifying. Once Long was fully gold, he and Din started falling after the fully gold Pockets. While Long and Din end up hitting the river, Pockets ends up hitting the side of the bridge they were fighting on earlier, shattering him into numerous gold pieces and evidently killing him as his remains fall into the water as well.

Despite Pockets’ murder of Mr. Wang and Long being completed, Long would later find himself back in the Spirit World as human again and when the Pippa God tries to let him through the gates with a parade, Long declines the offer and convinces the god to turn him back into a dragon so he could grant Din his last wish, in which the god agreed on the condition that he would serve 10 more masters. Long returns to Din and Din uses his last wish to heal Mr. Wang, bringing him back to life and undoing Pockets’ actions. Tall Goon and Short Goon also redeem themselves as they are finally happy with their wishes and leave Din alone, all leaving Pockets’ death and plans in complete vain.

Trivia

  • Pockets’ actual name is unknown, since he was merely nicknamed this due to the film not casting him as anything other than “Pockets.” His name can only be seen in the end credits.
  • Pockets shares a similar villainous character with Jafar, the main villain of Disney's Aladdin (a film Wish Dragon has been repeatedly compared to), as both are obsessed with stealing the magical objects (the magical lamp from Aladdin and the magical teapot from Long) so that they can gain power and neither of them want to share it with others. Both villains also antagonize the main protagonists.
    • That said, Pockets' fate of turning into a gold statue seems similar to that of Sa'Luk, the main villain of the Aladdin and the King of Thieves direct-to-video threequel.
  • This is the sixth Sony Pictures Animation villain to die after Chester V from Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2, the Hunter from The Star, the Spider-Verse version of the Prowler and the Green Goblin and PAL from The Mitchell's Vs The Machines.
  • Pockets serves as foil to Din and Long. Pockets admits that he's tired of being a servant to others, and wishes to control them with power and riches. This is in contrast to Din, who holds friendship and family in high regard over money and might. Long however, cared more about money and gold than anything else, but changed after meeting Din. Thus, Pockets serves as an example of who Din and Long would become if they valued money over family and friendship.
