Phil Urich

Phillip Urich is a major character in Marvel Comics, commonly in the Spider-Man comic book series. He is the nephew of Ben Urich and worked at the Daily Bugle as a journalist, who became exposed to the Goblin formula during an investigation at Oscorp Tower. When he came across, he would take it and transform himself into the Green Goblin.

For awhile, Phil was a good individual, having done heroic deeds while wearing the Green Goblin mantle and also during his time at the Daily Bugle. He would also ally with Spider-Man from time to time, helping him take down various villains. However, he would eventually scum to the effects of the Goblin formula, driving him insane, transforming him into a psychotic villain.

When he murdered Roderick Kingsley's brother, Daniel, he took on the mantle of the Hobgoblin. He would later go on to becoming the Goblin Knight of the Goblin Nation at the Goblin King's side before becoming the Goblin King himself, assuming leadership after Norman's downfall.

History

Green Goblin

Phil joined his uncle, Ben Urich, on a journalism assignment to investigate Oscorp Tower. When they were attacked by thugs. Phil hid and fell into Green Goblin formula. Dressing up in an experimental Green Goblin suit, Phil scared off the thugs. Phil decided to keep the equipment. Using his new equipment and powers, Phil became a hero. He would even encounter heroes like Spider-Man and Scarlet Spider. Phil even fought villains like Rhino and The Hobgoblin.

Green Goblin no more

During the events of Onslaughts attacks, Phil's Green Goblin gear was damaged when he battled Sentinels. With his gear damaged, Phil retired from being a hero.

Support Group

Phil would eventually create a support group for teen heroes called Excelsior. They even tried to help the Runaways. The team would eventually change its name to The Loners. Phil would later suffer a mental breakdown and attack his fellow team members. Phil escaped.

The Hobgoblin

Phil would later help his uncle out at Front Lines. Phil obtained a crush on Norah Winters, his coworker. When he learned that Norah was interested in Goblin stuff and looking into Goblin Gangs, Phil went to an old Green Goblin hideout to find something to impress her with. It was there that Phil was discovered by The Hobgoblin. Phil begged for his life but Hobgoblin picked up a plasma sword, not wanting Phil around to "complicate things". Phil's Goblin powers kicked in and he disoriented Hobgoblin with his sonic laugh. Using the plasma sword, Phil decapitated Hobgoblin. Taking the gear in the hideout, Phil became the new Hobgoblin. As Hobgoblin, Phil attacked Horizon Labs to steal Reverbium. This brought him into conflict with Spider-Man. Phil was nearly successful in killing Spider-Man by using his sonic laugh. However, Spider-Man was able to fight off Phil with the help of his partners at Horizon. When the security alarm kicked in, Phil rushed off to steal the Reverbium and escaped. Bringing the Reverbium to Wilson Fisk, Phil quickly gained a job working for Fisk. Phil would later give a video of himself as Hobgoblin to Norah Winters. As Hobgoblin, Phil battled Spider-Man when Spider-Man and Black Cat attempted to steal the Reverbium from Fisk. During the battle, Phil's sonic scream set off the Reverbium, causing the building to collapse. Phil saved Fisk from the collapse and officially became one of Fisk's agents.

Activities as The Hobgoblin

Hobgoblin would go on to fight Hercules after he defeated one of Fisks's gangs. Phil filmed the fight in hopes that it would boost his popularity as Hobgoblin. Ironically, when Hercules won, his popularity was boosted instead of Hobgoblin's. Fisk would convince Hercules not to hand Hobgoblin over to authorities. When Norah talked about how impressive Spider-Girl was, Hobgoblin attacked Spider-Girl to show how impressive he was. Spider-Girl nearly defeated Hobgoblin but Spider-Man intervened, believing she was too inexperienced to fight someone like Hobgoblin. As a result, Hobgoblin was able to escape. As Hobgoblin, Phil forced Norah and Randy to break up, causing Norah to begin dating Phil (not knowing he was behind the break up). Hobgoblin teamed up with Spider-Girl when ordered to by Fisk. On a mission to kill Human Fly, Hobgoblin encountered Agent Venom. The two fought and ended up in a stalemate. Human Fly escaped during the fight.

Return of the true Hobgoblin

In a fight with Spider-Man, Ty Stone used a machine to disable Spider-Man's spider sense but ended up jacking it up instead of disabling it. Hobgoblin retreated with Stone and returned to Fisk's lair. Under orders from Kingpin, Hobgoblin kidnapped Peter Parker. It was at Fisk's lair that Roderick Kingsley arrived, revealing that Phil had killed his brother, Daniel Kingsley. The two Hobgoblin's battled each other. In the chaos, Peter Parker and Max Modell escaped with The Goblin Key. Fisk ordered both Hobgoblins to bring him the key. Phil and Roderick made a temporary truce went chased after Parker and Modell. Peter and Max escaped into the Goblin Lair and locked the door. Both Hobgoblins battled Spider Man while occasionally nearly harming each other. When the Goblin Lair was detonated, Spider-Man fled. Phil wanted to go after him but Roderick electrocuted Phil, knocking him out. Instead of killing Phil, Kingsley offered to let Phil continue to live and be The Hobgoblin in exchange for getting payments. Phil would continue to operate as Hobgoblin.

End of Phil's career as Hobgoblin

When Superior Spider-Man destroyed Shadowland, Kingpin faked his death and Hobgoblin went on the run. Needing to pay off Kingsley, Phil resorted to robbing banks. This greatly irritated Superior Spider-Man as his bots were unable to see Phil due to a virus hidden in the software by Norman Osborn. When Osborn shut the virus off to avoid tipping off Superior Spider-Man, Superior Spider-Man was able to catch up to Hobgoblin. After being nearly defeated, Phil fled and ditched his gear. Unknown to him, Spider-Man had implemented tracers beneath his skin. When his identity as Hobgoblin was exposed to the public, Phil took Norah hostage. However, Spider-Man disarmed him and had him arrested. Phil was broken out of the transport by Menace who brought him to Green Goblin.

Goblin Knight

Green Goblin gave Phil the identity of Goblin Knight in exchange for full loyalty. After a battle with Hobgoblin's gang and the presumed death of Hobgoblin at Osborn's hands, Phil examines the corpse and finds that it isn't Kingsley. Phil destroyed the body in order to keep Osborn from losing his cool at Kingsley's former associates who had just joined Green Goblin. Goblin Knight took part in the destruction of Spider Island. Phil would later attempt to kill Norah only to find that his Uncle leaked false information in order to attempt to cure Phil. Phil would then battle Superior Spider-Man before fleeing. Goblin Knight would later nearly defeat The Avengers but was stopped by Spider-Man (Peter Parker). Goblin Knight escaped.

Goblin King

Following Osborn's defeat, Phil took leadership and declared himself Goblin King. Phil would come into conflict with Hobgoblin when Hobgoblin became a hero. Attempting to rescue Lilly, Menace, from authorities, Phil accidently caused her to get amnesia. Phil would later confront Kingsley and attempted to kill him but was stopped by Queen Cat, the hero Lilly had become. Phil fled and returned to his lair. There, he was met by John Myers who had arrived with villains Hobgoblin abandoned when he went good as well as Lilly. Goblin King planned to assassinate Kingsley. The plan failed because Lilly was really a spy for Kingsley and tipped him off about the plan. Phil attacked Hobgoblin but was defeated. Phil and his loyal followers were arrested. Phil would eventually escape the authorities. Goblin King would later attempt to steal a new energy source that was being presented by Alchemax. Goblin King battled Spider-Man but was defeated. Phil ultimately escaped with some of the material.

Fatal encounter

Phil raided on of Osborn's lairs that Osborn happened to be inside of. Osborn confronted Phil. Unaware that Osborn had the Carnage Symbiote, Phil attacked Osborn. To Phil's complete surprise, Osborn caught the blade of the plasma sword. Osborn then insulted Phil for never coming up with an original Goblin name. Osborn then impaled Phil through the chest with symbiote blades, killing Phil.
