Ninetales

Very smart and vengeful. Grabbing one of its many tails could result in a 1,000-year curse.
~ Ninetales' Shield Pokédex Entry

Ninetales is the overarching antagonist of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team. Its actions in the past causes conflict in the main plot, as when a greedy Pokémon trainer grabbed one of its tails, Ninetales punished him, transforming him into Gengar and his Gardevoir into a ghost. As a part of the curse, natural disasters would follow Gengar, raining havoc on the world.

Appearance

Ninetales's appearance is typical of its species, having a sleek fox-like body with tan fur. It has extra-long fur round its neck, coming out like a mane. A large fur tuft protrudes from its head, extending to four strands. On its face, it has striking red eyes with white pupils and a black nose. Like it's name sake, it has nine fox tails, longer than rest of its body, tipped red at the end.

Personality

On the surface, Ninetales is calm and elegant in mannerisms. Its direct while speaking, even with the most intimidating of Pokémon. It's wise, knowing much about the earth's natural forces. Being duty-bound, Ninetales is unwilling to leave its post in Mr Freeze and will protect its guests without hesitation. It will occasionally aid outsiders that seek its help first, but isolates itself majority of the time, even when called. Ninetales is unconcerned with the happenings outside of Mt. Freeze and will leaves others to deal with it.

Ninetales is highly judgmental, labelling individuals "cowards" or "selfless" after a short time. Though it doesn't hold those standards to itself, being selfish and vain. It will harshly punish troublemakers, even for minor things like Gengar touching its prized tail. Ninetales is apathetic towards innocents caught up in its curses, blaming the offender instead. It was only when Gengar desired redemption did Ninetales show mercy and told him how to revive Gardevoir.

Biography

According to a one thousand year-old legend, a greedy human wanted rare Pokémon in a sacred dungeon. Encountering Ninetales, the human grabbed one of its tails. For this, Ninetales tried to curse him. Protecting her master, Gardevoir absorbed the curse and was transformed into a ghost-like figure. When Ninetales asked if he wanted to save Gardevoir, the human fled instead. Disgusted at this cowardice, Ninetales gave out a second curse, that one day he'd be reborn as a Pokémon and the world's balance would be upset.

After a long time, the curse comes to fruition, as the human was transformed into a Gengar and natural disasters begin happening. When Pokémon are attempting to stop the disasters, Gengar frames the player as the human in the legend. To clear their name, the player journeys to Mt. Freeze to meet Ninetales. Just as a rescue team is about to attack the player, Ninetales slams into them, ordering peace. It's there that the truth is revealed and the player's innocence is proven. Ninetales explains not every disaster is its doing and the earthquakes are something else. It warns that an awakening beast, named Groudon, is causing the earthquakes. However, Ninetales refuses to leave Mt. Freeze and instead sends the player to stop it.

Sometime later, Gengar grows guilt-ridden over Gardevoir's form and journeys to Mt. Freeze. Ninetales reveals itself to the cursed human and accepts his apology. It then explains how he can break his and Gardevoir's curse. Afterwards, Ninetales can't be found in the game, as every time the player goes to Mt. Freeze, the message "It seems nobody is here" will appear.
