Modernia is a major character of the 2022 mobile game Goddess of Victory: Nikke. She is the main antagonist of the first-half of the main storyline.

She was formerly known as Marian who hails from Elysion's Silver Gun squad. However, Marian became a subject to corruption by the Raptures, eventually believing to be dead after her apparent euthanization by her own commander. After her corpse was salvaged, she was transformed by the Raptures and became a member of the Heretics, traitor Nikkes who fight for the Raptures, with their technology hybridized by that of the Raptures.

She was voiced by Kim Ha-ru in Korean, Hanazawa Kana in the Japanese version, and by Ryan Bartley in the English version.

Personality

In her initial appearance as Marian, she is kind and hospitable to others, especially to her commander whom she protects for all her life. Intolerable to injustice and impertinence, Marian will always speak out to the other Nikkes who show insubordiance against their human commanders, as shown with Counters due to their former commander dying after attempting to fight a Rapture with a handgun.

As Modernia, she shows the sadistic pleasure in torturing her enemies in a more cheerful manner, especially the Nikkes who protect humanity, in spite being merciful at first glance. After the corruption and her eventual restoration, Modernia has a mentality of an neonate, having troubles speaking simple words such as a name of her former comrades or being naive. As a result of her corruption, Modernia has the mannerisms to wear her underwear outside and she is fond of using gauze, using one as a headwear which reminisce the erstwhile days prior to becoming a Heretic. Marian oddly shows sympathy to a dying Rapture, which becomes a growing concern that leads to numerous parties to apprehend her.

History

"Over here."

EventScene Main 01 02

Marian was sent along with her commander, a fresh graduate. However, their transport vehicle was destroyed, leaving the commander with serious injuries. Attempting to make contact with the Ark, however to no avail. Marian then attempts to resuscitate her commander who is near at death's door. Afterwards, they met more Raptures along the way which they easily dispatched, promising to protect the commander at all costs. There, they meet both Rapi and Anis who introduced themselves as a member of Counters and that their former commander died fighting a Rapture. As much to Marian's disappointment, she lashes them out for leaving their commander to die, while Anis shows exasperation, Rapi on the other hand told them to move elsewhere.

Later on, Marian notifies everyone where to go, raising suspicions of a corruption within her brain. As they move into the rendezvous, Marian felt malaise which Anis notices. Rapi then orders her to strip off of her clothes, despite the commander and Marian's embarrassment. Nonetheless, Marian complied when her commander looks away. Despite the initial suspicion, she seems fine and proceed to move on. Later on the squad fought the Lord-class Rapture, which led to Marian suffering numerous damage, prompting the commander to apply bandages to her injuries.

As they move to the target coordinates, there was no sign of a skirmish or a target. Rapi then immediately points her gun at Marian, raising more than an eyebrow as the transport vehicle that was carrying both her and her commander wasn't shot on sight by an anti-aircraft cannon but rather imploded via explosives carried by the transport vehicle. Although she denies the claim, Marian started muttering "Over here." repeatedly, signifying that she was corrupted and was sending a distress signal to the Raptures. A Tyrant-class nicknamed The Blacksmith appears before capturing Marian and fought the Counters. Against all odds, Marian was released from the destroyed Tyrant, however the corruption has reached her brain, providing irreversible damage. As a protocol, the commander point their gun at Marian's head, in order to euthanize her and prevent becoming an 'irregular'. Marian thanks the commander for one last time about the bandage before shooting her dead, making it the end of Marian.

The Heretic

EventScene Chap 06 01

At some point in time, the Raptures retrieved Marian's body and revived her, providing her with hybrid Rapture technology. This led to her becoming a Heretic known as "Modernia."

Modernia later appears to save Chatterbox who was severely injured by Snow White. Her presence in the battlefield invoke as a sense of malicious aura within the commander. Modernia summons a horde of Raptures to distract Snow White and the Counters before they take their leave.

Modernia is later seen repairing Chatterbox, before being interrupted by Counters and Snow White. Snow White attempted to fire at her, but her bullets were blocked by a magnetic field. She then retaliates by knocking down Snow White with her mechanical wings, taking pleasure in torturing her. However, she fail to notice the commander who uses Snow White's own weapon to call a distress signal. Shortly after, the Counters with Snow White engage to fight Modernia, who managed to damage the Heretic's armor. One of the gunshot damages her visor, revealing her true identity: the once thought gone Marian. The commander calls her name, but Modernia appears to have forgotten her name and repeats calling it, feeling a odd familiarity within it. However, a dark light emanates within Modernia's body as she cries out, causing a powerful explosion within their proximity, knocking everyone unconscious.

Reuninion with the Commander

EventScene Chap 13 04

The Big Three CEOs made a full-scale operation which only has two goals: apprehend Modernia and destroy the underground facility. The commander faced with Modernia who was fighting Absolute squad, intending to shoot her with Vapaus, a compound which can suppress a Rapture corruption. Falling defeated, Modernia feigns regaining her memories as Marian, claiming she won't be shooting her and want to put the bandage to her injuries. As Rapi attempts to interrupt them, Modernia becomes enraged and pierces Rapi with a tentacle. The commander then points their gun at Marian, who warmheartedly claims that they will not shoot her. However, the commander then tells her that they are intending to "save her." Not buying her act, the commander then fires a Vapaus-laced bullet as per Rapi's warning. Despite this, Modernia catches it with her teeth before piercing the commander with a tentacle, becoming hysterical at the crucial moment and leaving the commander mortally wounded. The Counters then began shooting Modernia, with Rapi unleashing her Red Hood form, causing extreme temperatures to rise within her body and her hair to glow red. Rapi then frees herself out of the tentacle and throws it at Modernia with incalculable speed, hitting her in the face and knocking off her protective visor. Once again, a black light emits within her body prompting the Counters squad to fire at her head as the black energy explodes.

Finally, Modernia regains her memories as Marian, and was freed of becoming corrupted seeing the commander who once she promised to protect being mortally wounded. Marian then orders Anis and Rapi to gather first aid to save their commander's life. Applying hemostatic injection and painkillers to suppress the fatal wounds. Despite their injuries, Anis confirms that the commander's pulse is stable but the blood loss requires them to be sent into the Ark. However, Chatterbox's severed torso came from the sky and emits a blinding light, causing Marian to become corrupted once again. Chatterbox made one last maniacal laugh before being stomped by an enraged Anis, dying satisfied and successful and making Marian irreversibly corrupted. Leaving no choice, Rapi has to fire suppression bullets to knock Marian out cold before bringing her to the Ark.

In an effort to save Marian, a hard decision was made to give her a memory wipe, preventing her from becoming corrupted again. Despite this, she somehow remembers her name and her teammates.

Goodbye for Now

In the following days, Marian tries to get along with the Counters however due to the corruption, she struggles with speech. Nevertheless she participates in the Counters' operations. However at one battle, Marian was seen sympathizing a fallen Rapture, growing fears that she might become corrupted again. This led to numerous parties in an effort to apprehend Marian and dissect her, so they can use her hybrid Rapture and Pilgrim technology. The parties range from Burningum, a deputy chief to outlaws from the Heavenly Ascension.

As they managed to overcome all obstacles along the way, the commander brought her to the Pioneer consisting of Snow White, Rapunzel, and Scarlet. Making the difficult situation, the commander regretfully brings Marian to the Pioneer, causing Marian to tearfully plead to stay with them. Attempting to emit an another black light within her body, the Pioneer then pacifies Marian, rendering her unconscious before bringing her away from the Ark, making one goodbye to their Nikke who vows to protect them at all costs.

When Enikk revealed herself to be the higher-up in contact with Chatterbox who provides him with corrupted Nikkes implanted with Chatterbox's code in exchange of keeping the Ark safe, much to the commander's surprise, it is inferred that Marian is one of the Nikkes implanted with the corruption code which eventually led to her tragic downfall.

Living with the King and Pilgrims

Marian spent most of her days away from the commander under the Pioneer's care, however over time, she would become accustomed to many of the Pilgrim group's bad influences including craving for insects, consumption of adult magazines and alcoholism. Afterwards, she would be taken under the care of White Knights, Pilgrims who search for valuable treasures for their kingdom. Crown, the kingdom's ruler welcomes her with open arms.

Around that time, the kingdom was invaded by Raptures led by both Chatterbox and Indivilia, Marian and the rest of the kingdom's inhabitants valiantly defended the kingdom to deter its invaders, which they are successful in doing so.

It was later implied that Marian is likely a successor to the Rapture Queen herself. She gave both Indivilia and Chatterbox an order as she emanates an aura that the two Rapture underlings could not disobey, bowing down to their "queen".
