~ Megamind's second most famous quote.

Megamind is the titular main protagonist of DreamWorks Animation's franchise of the same name.

He is a blue alien with a fathomable Intellect and a desire for affection stemming from the dark past that he shares with his former archenemy, Metro Man, whom he would spend his villainy to topple over his nemesis for the fate of Metro City, with the latter always winning.

Megamind is aided by his Minion, a talking, sapient fish created for the purpose of his protection who doubles as his sidekick, and has robots called Brainbots, who do his bidding for him, even going so far through disguising themselves as civilians.

He is the former leader of the Doom Syndicate, the pupil turned archenemy of Machiavillain, the arch-nemesis of Tighten, and the new superhero of Metro City.

Biography

Megamind

Origins

In the beginning of the film, Megamind and Minion (as infants) were sent away by Megamind's parents (who were presumably scientists) in a space pod to escape the destruction of their home planet by a black hole. During the journey to Earth, another space pod flew by, with a baby Metro Man, who was also sent away to escape from the black hole threatening his home planet (which, coincidentally, seemed to be a rival planet to Megamind's). Both pods land in Metro City, but results vary: while Metro Man's pod landed in the home of a loving and wealthy couple who raised him as their own son, while Megamind's pod landed in the Metro City prison, where the prisoners raised him. The prisoners teach little Megamind all about right and wrong (mostly wrong) using "Baby Super-villains" CDs, DVDs and flashcards. During their childhood, Metro Man was popular among the kids while Megamind was ridiculed due to his appearance and brilliance, while also due to the fact that Metro Man was the more favorable candidate, which would eventually lead to Megamind becoming the villain he was and Metro Man's rival.

Feud with Metro Man

The feud between Megamind and Metro Man remain constant until one day Megamind kidnaps news reporter Roxanne Ritchi and lures Metro Man into a trap near an observatory, where Metro Man becomes weakened by the copper lining inside the observatory before Megamind's death ray destroys the observatory, leaving nothing for Metro Man to be left as a skeleton with his cape. Upon witnessing this, Megamind revels in his victory against Metro Man and takes over Metro City to himself. Though at first, Megamind feels good of his victory, but later on, he feels isolated and depressed, as he finds his villainy with no meaning without anyone to stop him. He does this after several days of committing crimes with no one to stop him.

Creating a New Hero

While attempting to destroy the museum dedicated to Metro Man, Megamind disguises himself as its curator Bernard to prevent Roxanne from finding him. It’s then Roxanne made a comment that inspired the disguised Megamind to create a superhero to battle against him. Deciding to keep things back in balance again for the good of Metro City, Megamind creates a serum containing Metro's Man powers, coming from Metro Man's DNA found in his old cape. He intends to inject the serum to a person worthy enough to defeat him and continue the greater good. Just before he could do so, Roxanne sneaks into his lair with her cameraman Hal Stewart, intending to find out what Megamind's plans are. The resulting chaos ended up with the serum accidentally injected into Hal, who would later inherit all of Metro Man's powers. Taking the opportunity, Megamind heads onward to Hal's apartment, disguises himself as Hal's "Space-Dad", training him to become a hero for days. During the training, Megamind gives Hal his superhero name "Titan" to which Hal misinterprets as "Tighten". At the same time, Megamind develops a romantic relationship with Roxanne under his Bernard disguise. Unfortunately, unknown to Megamind, Hal himself also has feelings for Roxanne, intending to use his own powers to win her heart for himself, as he believes that being a hero means to get the girl for himself rather than doing the greater good.

As Megamind continues his date, he starts to lose interest in villainy, causing Minion to leave him after a fallout, feeling somewhat betrayed after Megamind says some nasty things to him. Later on their dinner date, Megamind's Bernard disguise falters away, leaving Roxanne to dump him and causing him to forget where he left his invisible car that contains the same defuser gun that injected the powers to Hal. Deciding to continue with his plan, Megamind waits for Tighten to arrive and fight him, only to seek him out again in his apartment, where Megamind discovers that Tighten has decided to use his powers for nefarious purposes, when he sees that Tighten stole large sums of money, an arcade video game, ATM machine, bike and electronics. Tighten then reveals that he originally tried to become a hero to "get the girl" (Roxanne), and found out about "Bernard" and her relationship, and now wants to establish a partnership with Megamind, but the latter, outraged by seeing his "hero" turning out to be a selfish person, refuses and instead goads Tighten to fight him by revealing his "Space-Dad" and "Bernard" disguises.

Plan Backfire

As planned, Titan fights against Megamind, unleashing his rage against him, and finally manages to defeat him, berating him for "stealing" Roxanne and tricking him. Megamind initially congratulates Titan for his victory and awaits to go back to jail again, but Titan wants to kill him instead of turning him over to the authorities. Shocked, Megamind orders his Brain-Bots to initiate a backup plan: to contain Titan in a copper-based sphere. However, this fails forcing Megamind to flee while Titan himself starts to terrorize Metro City as its new villain, causing more chaos to the city than Megamind has ever done while continuing to search for Megamind. Confused about the inconsistency of the copper as a weakness, Megamind turns to Roxanne, apologizing to her for his actions on her and convincing her to find a way to stop Tighten.

To start off, they manage to track down Metro Man's old lair, where they are surprised to see that Metro Man is actually alive, demanding an explanation for what happened. Feeling somewhat remorseful, Metro Man explains to Megamind and Roxanne that he felt tired battling against Megamind, as he feels that Megamind is having emotions during their feud. Metro Man also explained that, like Megamind, he never made a choice to decide what he wants to be in life despite his success as a superhero, and decides to retire by faking his death to pursue a career as a musician. Megamind understands Metro Man's intentions, but pleads to him to stop Titan, to which Metro Man respectfully refuses, knowing it would be against his vow to be making a choice in life. Eventually, Metro Man encourages Megamind to stand up for the greater good and fight back against Titan, to which Megamind refuses, stating that he will always be the failing villain to be. Having no more leads to stop Titan, Megamind decides to turn himself back to prison, intending to pay the price for his actions, including creating Titan.

With the supers no longer helping, Roxanne calls to Titan, trying to appease to his conscience, but Titan retorts that by denying that he has got any good in him, and instead kidnaps Roxanne and tying her up in the top of Metro Tower, intending to goad Megamind out to fight him by threatening Roxanne's life. Seeing this on TV, Megamind pleads the Warden to release him, even going so far to apologize and pay for the mistakes he done in the past (including hurting his dear best friend, Minion). In an act of surprise, Minion disguises himself as the Warden, accepting Megamind's apology, and the two head off to stop Titan in his tracks, while the real Warden (who’s tied up by Minion to help Megamind) wishes them good luck.

Redemption

Megamind and Minion arranged a plan of rescue and action, by having the latter to disguise himself as the former to save Roxanne with the help of the Brain-Bots, as well as the former to disguise himself as Metro Man to track down Titan and verbally berate him for his actions. The plan somehow worked, although Minion ended up being stabbed by the tower's rod near a water fountain by Titan, while Megamind, under his Metro Man disguise, orders Titan to leave Metro City and never return. Titan agrees to go, but later returns after realizing that the "hero" said the word "Metrosity", something which only Megamind says, as he has trouble saying some of the simple words, such as "hello" for "ollo". Titan then calls out Megamind for fooling him. Megamind, however remains unfazed, saying that it was Hal's entitlement and refusal to move on from Roxanne's rejection that led to him going on a crime spree. Seeing that it didn't work, and that Hal still wishes to kill him, Megamind continues fighting against Titan to no avail, that is until Roxanne discovers where Megamind left his invisible car and his defuser gun the night she dumped him. She explains this to Megamind, leaving him to finally get hold of the defuser gun, but Tighten throws him up into the sky, hoping that he will fall to his death. Just as things are about to go down when Titan decides to finish off Roxanne near the water fountain, Megamind dehydrates himself into a cube, landing into the water, where he re-hydrates himself and uses the defuser gun to remove all of Titan's powers for good. Having defeated Hal for good, Megamind goes in to save Minion by throwing him into the fountain water, since fish need water to survive, thanking him for his help. It was then the citizens of Metro City cheered for Megamind as their new hero. However, because of his past, things are awkward between them at first.

Feeling good about this, Megamind realizes that destiny itself is the path he can choose for himself. Feeling capable to becoming a real hero, Megamind arranges the Brain-Bots to repair the destruction he and Hal has done to Metro City as retribution, and the Metro Man Museum gets dedicated to him. As for Hal, he gets arrested and thrown into Megamind's old cell for a life sentence as punishment for his crimes against Metro City. During a celebration of Megamind as the new hero, a disguised Metro Man within the audience silently gives his congratulations to Megamind, having known that he had some good left in him. To make things better, Roxanne rekindles her romantic relationship with Megamind in honor of his actions for her. The film ends with Megamind, Roxanne, Minion and everyone in Metro City dancing to the tune of Michael Jackson's Bad. Roxanne kisses Megamind on the cheek as the song ends.

Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate

Two days after the events of the first film, Megamind now takes on the role of defender of Metro City. Along with Minion, now called Ol' Chum, stop the criminal trio known as the Go Fish Gang form stealing a priceless fish. For his heroic efforts, Megamind is presented with the key to the city. Chum however is feeling abandoned and unappreciated in his efforts, Chum tells Megamind that he wants to be his sidekick. After being rejected, Chum states that he will look for other opportunities, which Megamind allows.

When the Doom Syndicate, a team of supervillains that included Megamind, breaks out of prison to visit him, believing that he remains a villain and that his role as a hero is part of an evil plan. Megamind knew if they find out he is not a villain anyone, he will be beaten up by them. Megamind decides to keep up evil appearances unit he find a way to stop them. The Doom Syndicate later go on a crime spree and eventually challenge Megamind to prove he's still evil by robbing a bank. Megamind tries to do this, but is aided by Keiko Morita, his self-proclaimed biggest fan, who helps him stage a fake robbery.

Megamind with his old crew fool, reveals an abandoned villainous plot he has carried out to launch Metro City to the moon using rockets placed underground. The Doom Syndicate prepares to launch them, but Megamind stops them. Realizing that he is up to something, they vow to either start Metro City themselves or they will destroy the city. Realizing that he cannot defeat the Syndicate alone, Megamind and Roxanne track down Chum in a remodeled diner and tries to get his help. However, after realizing that he might belong more in the store than with him, Megamind regrets letting Chum go and then heads back to his lair, leaving Roxanne and Keiko behind.

The Doom Syndicate later learn his facade that night when he try trapping them in a portal-prison, where Megamind finds himself overpowered by them. He hides in an alley, feeling defeated, but is confronted by Roxanne and Keiko, who remind him that it's okay to ask others for help. Chum also returns when Megamind tells him that he is indeed his sidekick. Megamind, Chum, Roxanne and Keiko team up to face the Syndicate of Doom but fail to stop the launch. They manage to redirect Metro City safely back to Earth. Roxanne is elected the new mayor of Metro City, while Keiko launches a newly designed hero signal as Megamind feels accomplished in his new team.

My head wasn’t in the game that day. We were kind of goin’ through the motions. So, using my super speed, I decided to go clear my head. Then I realized, we had done this same silly charade our entire lives. I tried to get my mind off how I was feeling, but I just felt stuck. And I began to realize, despite all my powers, each and every citizen of Metro had something I didn’t. A choice. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always had to be what this city wanted me to be. But what about what I wanted to do? Then it suddenly hit me. I do have a choice! I can be whatever I wanna be! No one said that this hero thing had to be a lifetime gig. You can’t just quit either. That’s when I got the brilliant idea… to fake my death.

Megamind: No, I’m with you! Look, we need your help.
Metro Man: I’m sorry. I really am. Um, I’m…I’m done. You know, little buddy, there's a yin for every yang. If there's bad, good will rise up against it. It's taken me a long time to find my calling. Now, it's about time... you find yours.

Trivia

  • Ben Stiller (who also voiced Alex in the Madagascar film franchise) and Robert Downey Jr. were both originally approached for the role of Megamind, but turned it down, due to scheduling conflicts. However, Stiller did provide Bernard's voice for the real curator and Megamind's disguise.
