~ Kevin Barnes' last words before Matthew and Jack take over, and Doey dies.

Subject-1322B: Kevin Barnes is a major character in Safe Haven, the fourth chapter of the 2021 indie horror game Poppy Playtime.

He is one of the three children that make up Experiment-1322: Doey the Doughman, one of Playtime Co.'s most dangerous creations. A violent problem child with anger issues, Kevin's rage at his friends' deaths results in him turning against the protagonist, thus becoming the final boss of the chapter.

Just like Doey the Doughman (due to him, Jack and Matthew possessing him), he was voiced by Michael Kovach, who also voiced the Prototype in the same game, Jax from The Amazing Digital Circus, N in Murder Drones and Rocky Rickaby in Lackadaisy.

Personality

After a brief... interruption, we've successfully extracted Subject 1322. Specifically, 1322B, from the Home Sweet Home. Before said interruption, I attempted to detail the subject's condition. And overview the suitability of one Kevin Barnes in relation to Project: Doey. The "neural abnormalities" noted in Dr. Newman's report are detailed in connection to behavioral issues demonstrated within Playcare. Trouble getting along with others, aggressive and often confrontational social tendencies, and an otherwise combative nature clearly relay that Kevin is, put simply, a problem child. What friends he does have, he's reported to have attacked in moments of... intense play. These tendencies raise concerns. The subject excels in all physical tests. Reflexes, reaction time, and mental fortitude all tested well above average in Game Station examinations. So, in spite of said concerns, in Dr. Sawyer's eyes, Kevin is ideal for the Project.
~ A Scientist interviewing the report of Kevin's anger issues.

Kevin Barnes was noted to be troublesome even as a human. Due to "neural abnormalities", he had severe anger issues that resulted in him hurting even his friends, however few he had. It's not until he became part of Doey that those anger issues became outright homicidal. When Jack Ayers' parents stressed him, Kevin lashed out and violently murdered them. It's implied that those same anger issues caused Kevin to participate in the Hour of Joy. When the Prototype destroys the Safe Haven, he turns to blaming the Intruder and Poppy for being responsible for the Haven's destruction and tries to kill them in furious anger and rage, ultimately forcing the Intruder to have to kill Doey in self-defense.

Despite this, it's made clear Kevin isn't necessarily evil. He is just another victim of Harley Sawyer's Bigger Bodies Initiative who meant to do the right thing, cared for his friends and turned against the Intruder in a misguided sense of revenge and justice. In addition, the one true friend he never hurt is Joseph, and apparently, he is very prideful in his peak physical prowess judging from his tests at the Game Station. And in his human picture, Kevin is happily smiling, proving that he does have emotions other than just anger.

Biography

Past

Kevin was a orphan in the Playcare with all the other kids. It's unknown what happened to his parents, though they're presumably dead rather than having given him up for adoption. He was hot headed and violent, usually picking fights with other kids and injuring them. Due to excelling in physical tests at the Game Station, he was chosen by Harley Sawyer to make up part of Doey the Doughman alongside Jack Ayers and Matthew Hallard, despite his colleague's protests.

After becoming Doey, Jack's parents were brought in to see him. Though they tried to comfort him, Doey was already used to the "gentle voices" of scientists tricking and abusing him. Because of this, Kevin took over and brutally killed both of Jack's parents. It's implied the two were purposefully sent to die by Playtime Co. to cover up loose ends.

It's possible Kevin took over Doey and participated in the Hour of Joy. Regardless if he did or not, Doey would then run Safe Haven, protecting the innocent toys inside from the Prototype's minions, such as CatNap, Huggy Wuggy, Mommy Long Legs or Dr. Sawyer.

Chapter 4: Safe Haven

An explosion and a massacre befalls in Safe Haven, where Doey blames himself for not being there to protect his friends from the Prototype setting up the explosives that destroyed him. This is the final straw that causes Kevin to snap, blaming the Intruder and Poppy for Safe Haven's destruction despite Jack and Matthew's protests. After being crushed by falling debris, he transforms into a reptilian-like monster and attacks the Intruder in rage.

The player must then defeat Doey/Kevin in battle using liquid nitrogen canisters that freeze his body. After getting Doey stuck in the final one, the player then uses a tunnel boring machine to crush and kill him. Kevin rages and keeps blaming the Intruder for it, though Jack and Matthew apologize for being unable to stop him before dying. This also ends Kevin's vengeful wrath.

Trivia

  • Kevin's wording that "parents" hurt him and he needs to hurt back might imply he was being abused by his family and killed them in return. However, hurting back might also refer to Jack Ayers' parents, so it's unknown either way.
  • Before the final battle, there were several other moments of Kevin taking control of Doey. Specifically, when he angrily talks about the Doctor being the one who made the children into experiments, and explains that he has planted traps against Doey all over No Man's Land. This confirms that Kevin has his standards and that he has a certain degree of self-control.
  • Kevin's (Doey) wrath - is one of 7 deadly sins (the evil 7), this represents 6 other Poppy Playtime villains' sins, Prototype represents Pride, Mommy Long Legs would be Lust, Doctor for Greed, Huggy Wuggy for Gluttony, CatNap for Sloth and lastly Baba Chops (Nightmare Critter) for Envy.
