“ | I don't understand you people! I mean, all these picky little points you keep bringing up. They don't mean nothing! You saw this kid just like I did. | „ |
~ Juror 10 at the start of his rant. |
“ | You know what I mean? | „ |
~ Juror 10's repeated quote. |
Juror 10 is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Juror 7) of the teleplay Twelve Angry Men and its 1957 film and one of two main antagonists (alongside Juror 3) in the 1997 TV film. He is the tenth of the twelve jurors.
He was portrayed by the late Ed Begley in the 1957 film, and by Mykelti Williamson in the 1997 TV film.
Personality
“ | Only an ignorant man can believe that! [...] Do you think you were born with a monopoly on the truth? | „ |
~ Juror 9 to Juror 10. |
Juror 10 is a man of extreme prejudice and ignorance. From the start of the film, he speaks of the defendant boy in racist stereotypes, even assigning a number of negative and derogatory characteristics of the boy. As the film progresses, Juror 10 becomes more frustrated and outspoken as Juror 8 successfully argues his points, convincing more and more jurors that the kid is truly innocent. He ignorantly rejects Juror 8's arguments, without showcasing why Juror 8 is actually wrong. His anger eventually boils up into a highly racist rant, showcasing his dogmatic perspective on the world. It backfires on him and he is humiliated to the point where he changes his vote. He is also very illiterate, especially to the point where Juror 11, despite having English as his second language, corrects him on his grammar.
Role
Since the start of the film, Juror 10 had been spreading his bigotry from the beginning of the movie, attributing the defendant and his kind to a number of racist stereotypes and expressing his hate for him and other people who are similar to him. Juror 9 points out Juror 10's ignorance, and other jurors criticize Juror 10 for his faulty reasoning. His frustration builds up until he loses it all and lashes out, displaying his prejudice and fury. The other jurors choose to just sit there and ignore him as a result of this. Juror 10 doesn't stop his diatribe until he realizes that no one is listening to him or really wants to hear him, and that's when Juror 4 tells him to shut up right away. Feeling defeated, humiliated, and proven wrong, he eventually changes his vote. His vote would leave Juror 3 and Juror 4 as the remaining person voting guilty. In the 1997 remake, he declares that he still believes that the defendant is guilty but changes his vote anyway as he knows nobody will listen to him.
