Imaginary Barry

It's great that you first create an imaginary friend and then you can't even get along with that guy. People skills, Al. You're a master!
~ Imaginary Barry

Imaginary Barry is the tritagonist of the 2010 horror videogame Alan Wake DLC: The Signal, and the secondary antagonist in its sequel DLC The Writer, and its 2021 both remakes.

He is the mental manifestation of Barry Wheeler, unconsciously created by Alan Wake from his perspective form towards him, to initially help him on the path inside his mind, until he ends up turning against him, because he felt "replaced" by Thomas Zane, the poet, like his best friend and wants to kill him, without knowing that he is not real.

He was voiced by Fred Berman, who also voiced his original counterpart, Vinnie Gognitti from Max Payne franchise and Vincent Tuzzi in True Crime: New York City.

Biography

The Signal

When Alan Wake realizes that he is all alone in the Dark Place, he unexpectedly meets Barry Wheeler, but it turns out that he is not the real one, but a version imagined by Alan, who provides him with company, as well as the same kind of jokes. than he did the original, to give you an idea of the situation of what is happening inside his head.

However, being only a manifestation in his consciousness, and having no real physical form or personality of his own, "Barry" cannot fight or explain anything that Alan does not know. But still, he has accompanied him throughout the journey, giving Alan Wake advice and information, until at one point he disappears for no reason.

The Writer

Imaginary Barry reappears, after Alan Wake suffers a fit of madness when remembering the confinement in the Cauldron Lake Lodge by Dr. Emil Hartman, to remind Alan Wake that this "world" is different and that things here they can change quickly, but Thomas Zane reunites with Alan at that very moment, causing Barry to sulkily disappear completely.

By the time Alan Wake finally arrives at the Bird Leg Cabin. Then Thomas Zane reappears to tell him that before meeting his other self, he will have to erase from his mind all the fantasies he created in the Dark Place, including his imaginary version of his friend Barry. To which Alan is very passive about this, as he claims that he's not even real. But just as Alan Wake almost meets Insane Alan, Barry turns evil due to the other Alan's words, and informs him that the only way to get to the cabin is through him.
