Haiji Towa is a minor antagonist in the Danganronpa series, being featured as a major character in Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls. He is the leader of the adult-formed group, the Resistance against "The Warriors of Hope", a group of children who were killing adults in Towa City for it to become a children's paradise.
Although initially heroic, his desire for revenge against the children and his bloodlust against them turned him into a full antagonistic role, while also implying that he has pedophilic tendencies.
He was voiced by Shinichiro Miki in Japanese and Matthew Mercer in English.
Biography
Haiji Towa is the son of Tokuichi Towa, the chairman of the city. One day, Tokuichi had to take care of Monaca, the daughter he had with a girl, whom he and Haiji physically and psychologically mistreated just for being an unwanted daughter, to the point that she had to pretend that she had lost the ability to move her legs and get a wheelchair as the result. Sometime later, Monaca took control of the family's robotic organization, in order to use them to create Monokumas for Junko Enoshima, and help both groups, Junko's and the Future Foundation, without Haiji, Tokuichi, or any other adult noticing.
When Tokuichi did not want to do more, Monaca had him killed, being killed in front of Haiji, after that he broke his arm after it was crushed by a Monokuma and became the leader of The Resistance, having a great hatred of the children. Because of his cowardice, he would not try to make any attack to prevent them from killing adults. After that, he met Komaru and Toko, whom he helped until he believed they were part of the children . As a result, he locked them up. Sometime later, they gained his trust again, at a time when they were going to find a robot to face the children, he revealed that he was a pedophile, saying that he liked younger and quieter girls. To drive this point home, the art book reveals that he would like the elementary-school-aged girl Kotoko Utsugi (who already suffered multiple sexual assaults) sexually and only dislikes her because of her personality.
Later, Haiji would use his robot known as Big Bang Monokuma to destroy multiple Monokumas and try to kill the Monokuma Kids. After he would arrive to where Komaru and Toko were, who had defeated Monaca, in this part, Haiji would try to convince Komaru to destroy the control and thus end all of this, and even after knowing that if that happened all the children, who were brainwashed, were going to die and that this would cause a war, he kept trying to convince her. He also psychologically attacked Komaru after she had seen her possible dead parents, telling her that those were her parents and that he had to break the control to take revenge.
After that, he hits Toko as she prevented Komaru from breaking it. After Big Bang Monokuma is defeated by Komaru and Toko, Haiji lost hope and left the building. At the end of the game, we see him still in despair. It is not known if he is still the leader of the Resistance or not.
Trivia
- Haiji Towa is one of the most hated characters in all of Danganronpa due to his pedophilic actions, abusing his sister, and helping said sister with some of her actions.
- Some fans have speculated that, due to his attraction to young girls and Monaca growing up around him, that he could have taken the opportunity to sexually assault Monaca.
- His line, "I like 'em younger. As young as possible." (Quoted above) became an internet meme.
