Los Ganado, also known simply as Ganado, are undead-like people infected with Las Plagas and the main antagonists in the 2005 survival horror video game Resident Evil 4 and its 2023 remake. They are the people of Valdelobos infected by Las Plagas, courtesy of Los Iluminados, a neopagan cult led by Osmund Saddler.

The male villagers and zealots were voiced by Carlos Carrasco.

Description

Unlike zombies, Ganados appear outwardly more human and possess much more intelligence and sentience, being capable of speaking and carry out regular day to day tasks but are under the control of their master, Los Iluminados cult leader Osmund Saddler, along with others those who control the parasite such as Bitores Méndez and Ramón Salazar. Because of Plaga, Ganados have no fear of death nor injuries and continue to attack the armed Leon Kennedy. Since almost all Ganados only really wield melee weapons, it is rare to find Ganados with firearms; they may wield a minigun or an RPG, or man a turret. But if they carry an appropriate weapon, Ganados can throw it, as well as get dynamite to light and throw it like if it was a grenade.

Ganados also possess high pain tolerance, managing to take many bullets from a firearm as well as cuts from a combat knife before eventually dying. They are also seen to be strong enough to carry an adult man over with relative ease, Ganados are also tactically aware and will attempt to surround the player; even attempt to flank and ambush the player sometimes. They are three types of Ganado: Villagers, Cultists and Combantants, but they all follow and worship Saddler.

Types of Ganado

Villagers

Once the peaceful people of Valdelobos, they become ruthless savages under Saddler's direct control and were told that anyone attempts to infiltrate the village must be killed, so they attempted to recapture Ashley as well as kill Leon but managed to murder the two Spanish cops that escorted Leon there. Although they were ordered to kill any trespassers, Villagers will still carry out regular farming duties and daily routines, albeit their hygiene is poorer.

They were led by their Village Chief, Bitores Mendez, who placed memos around the village for the villagers to read, which are regular orders for them to carry out. The main sub-bosses for the Villagers are Dr. Salvador and the two Bella Sisters, who all wield chainsaws, and are extremely violent and dangerous. The Bella Sisters wear bandages around their faces, while Salvador wears a potato sack on his head.

Cultists

Cultists are the most devoted members of Los Illuminados and are based Ramon Salazar's castle as well as led by Salazar himself who seems to have more control over his Ganado than Mendez, and does the same thing as he places memos all over the castle for the Cultists to read, mostly orders for them to carry out. They are dressed in robes and can be seen worshipping the Los Illumanidos; black is worn by the regular ones, purple is worn by higher ranking ones and red is worn by the highest ones who often wear goat-skull masks or cult amulets around their necks.

They are better equipped than Villagers and wield mostly medieval weaponry. They also may have a more zombie appearence, often shuffling around aimlessly and chanting sinister mantras. Likely they havn't left the castle in years, they are extremly pale and bald, but they more likely shaved all their hair as a religious statement rather than an effect from the infection. Their main sub-boss is Garrador, a tall and powerful man who was wielded with long and sharp blades.

Combatants

Combatants are members of Saddler's private militia, assigned to protect his island complex. They are generally better equipped and more intelligent than the other Ganados and can also run faster, making them the most dangerous type among the three. They borrow weapons from the Cultists, such as RPGs, Crossbows and Flails, but have their own unique weapons, such as Stun Rods. If the Ashley Graham plan would fail, Saddler would send his Combatants to the United States where they would ferment chaos and disorder from within, but both plans failed due to Saddler and the Combatants being killed on the Island. Their main sub-boss are J.J., a muscular soldier who is incredibly strong and carries a Mini Gun. Although he is absent in the remake and replaced by a Brute.

Unique types

Dr. Salvador

The Chainsaw Man, named Dr. Salvador is a tall, chubby villager armed with his trademark chainsaw. He will relentlessly attack any outsiders with his chainsaw, decapitating them in the process. Unlike most villagers, Dr. Salvador is highly durable, allowing him to take considerable punishment even with a Shotgun blast.

Dr. Salvador is encountered multiple times in the remake, first at the Village Square, then at the road leading to the Lake, and later on at the mines.

Bella Sisters

The Chainsaw Sisters, named Bella Sisters are the female counterparts to the Chainsaw Man. Much like Dr. Salvador, they are armed with a chainsaw and are highly durable compared to other Ganados.

Brutes

The Brutes are an exclusive Ganado type added in the Resident Evil 4 remake. They are large, bulky Ganado wearing an animal mask and are always found armed with heavy weapons. They come in two types: Sledgehammer and Crossbow. The Sledgehammer is noted for their cow head mask and will attack by swinging their hammers. They are sometimes found unarmed. Unarmed Brutes can attack with a charge attack or powerful punches. The Crossbow Brute can be found at the Island as a replacement to the Gatling Man. Crossbow Brutes will wind up their modified crossbow to fire multiple rounds, dealing rapid damage. They can also perform a swift kick if their targets stray too close from them.

Garrador

The Garrador is a large Ganado armed with two sharp blades from its arm. It has a large Plaga assimilated from its rear which can be exposed with a sneak attack, giving higher physical strength compared to other Ganados. Garradors are highly uncontrollably aggressive and will relentlessly attack anything that goes along the way, making them extremely dangerous. As a result, their eyes are sealed shut, making them completely blind and reliant on echolocation to hunt down their victims.

Their name means "clawer" in Spanish.

Known Ganados

Osmund Saddler

Osmund Saddler is the main antagonist of Resident Evil 4 and its remake. He is the one with complete control over the Ganados, and is the leader of Los Illumanidos; the religious cult group which are Ganados are members of. His plan involved the kidnapping of the U.S. Presidents daughter, Ashley Graham, making her join the Ganados and then sends her back to her country to turn her father into a Ganado, then Saddler would have control over America using the President as one of his minions. Leon confronted Saddler on the Island and Osmund transformed into a powerful Plaga-monster, but was killed by Leon when Ada Wong helped by giving him the RPG. Saddler was also the one responsible for all the turning of the Ganados.

Ramon Salazar

Ramón Salazar was the eighth castallen of the castle nearby fortress to the Ganado-infected Village, and was one of Saddler's commanders who had control over the Ganado, and Salazar appeared as the leader of the Cultist Ganados. Salazar attempted to kill Leon numerous times as well as recapture Leon by using his Cultists or using the death traps throughout the castle. Ramon was protected by two Verdugo as his personal bodyguards, and Salazar is 20 years old despite his appearence. Before the infection, Saddler managed to already corrupt the young Salazar into allowing the Parasites to be released as well as giving the Los Illumanidos back their rights. Salazar was placed in charge of carrying out the rituel for Ashley Graham and succeeded in the tower, but afterwards, Leon confronted Salazar and the 20 year old fused with the Plaga Queen and the black-cloaked Verdugo to fight Leon but failed and was killed by Leon, who then left the Castle to the Island.

Bitores Mendez

Bitores Méndez was the Village Chief, making him the leader of the Ganado Villagers, and was one of Saddler's commanders who controlled the Ganado. He was incredibly strong and had his Villagers carry out various task which involved in capturing or killing Ashley, Leon and Luis Sera. Bitores had a false eye; which was the key to leaving the Village. Mendez was confronted by Leon at a Warehouse, and Bitores transformed into a Plaga-monster but was killed by Leon and his false eye was retrieved, used to escape the Village and infiltrate Ramon Salazar's Castle. Mendez was strong enough to kill someone, almost killing Leon numerous time but Leon luckily survived all the times. Mendez was also willing to let Leon live since he was slowly transforming into a Ganado, but when Leon still become annoying to him, Mendez planned on killing him.

Jack Krauser

Jack Krauser may have not been a Ganado, but he gained the Dominant Species Plaga blade-arm; a dangerous weapon he used. In the remake, he also possessed an another arm he can use both as a shield and to restrain his victims. Saddler had Krauser kidnap Ashley Graham, and Jack was working for Albert Wesker as well as, and only worked for Saddler because he wanted the sample. Krauser was skilled in knife fights, dueling Leon with his combat knife and nearly killed him, but Ada showed up and saved Leon from Krauser. Leon yet again encountered Krauser, and Jack told him where all the keys are to get through the wall and rescue Ashley, but planned on killing him as he had the third one. Leon managed to defeat Krauser and take all of them then left to save Ashley, Ada Wong then went to the same area and encountered Krauser there; who was severly injured by Leon but still attempted to kill Ada. Ada appeared as Krauser's true killer, as she killed the injured soldier. It was then revealed by Saddler to Leon, that Osmund planned on killing him anyway because he couldn't trust him. In the remake, Krauser was instead working for the cult to gain more power after the incident in Amparo which caused him his soldiers, seeking revenge against the U.S. Government.

Don Jose

Don Jose is the first Ganado encountered by the player. When Leon asked him about Ashley's whereabouts, Jose aggressively scolds the agent in his native tongue. Despite apologizing for barging in, Esteban immediately attacks Leon with his axe, presumably to defend his own house or due to him being an outsider. He died shortly after a fight with Leon.

Movies

The Ganados appear in Resident Evil: Damnation. Their appearances are more zombie-like and have blood dripping from their eyes when transforming, and when walking, they shamble more like zombies. Like the game, they are capable of wielding weaponry but their corpses don't melt when finally killed and can sprout out the Plaga from their heads. Alexander Kozachenko may carry the Dominant Species Plaga because he can control the Lickers but although Ganados still attack him. The Ganados were used in the Eastern Slav as Bio Organic Weapons in their war, Leon Kennedy went without orders to investigate this and encountered his old foes once again.

As Ada Wong dismissively said to Leon, the reason why this particular Ganado variant had contrasted other variants that the protagonists faced prior was because of their parasites' defective state. Similar defects apparently found in Dominant-type of the same plaga variant which threaten to regress it into subordinate-type. Such issue was deliberately in Svetlana Belikova's part knowing the rebels would try to get their hands of same plagas.

Trivia

Although the game is set in Spain, Ganados speak in the neutral dialect, as mostly used by Mexicans. This was corrected in the remake.
At the very start of the game, before reaching the village centre, the first Ganados will not disappear after dying, and cannot be decapitated.
Also at the very start, three Ganados will spot Leon from an unreachable cliff, where they will alert the others upon seeing him. These Ganados do not appear if starting a New Game Plus.
In Chapter 4-1, if you kill a cultist patrolling the tower with the jammed gears in it, the top part of his cloak disappears.
Several drafts were proposed for the cultists, but the goat skull mask was chosen as a suitable enemy design due to its relations to black magic.
Ganados will not throw weapons at the player if they come from behind; one can just simply walk past them without suffering attacks from behind.
Before Mike was killed, there was a cutscene that showed three scythe-wielding Combatants. This is only time scythes are ever seen in Combatants' hands.
Since Ganados use the same in-game quotes from the main game, they erroneously refer to the player as male, even when playing as Ada or Ashley.
Ganados can say the phrase "¡No dejen que escape de la isla vivo!" ("Don't let him escape from the island alive!") even when the player is not in the island.
Combatants are the game's only enemies (except zealot leaders and ambushing zealots in the castle) that use firearms - namely, Gatling Man. They are also occasionally seen with RPGs.
Before going to the camera room where you can find the screens showing Ashley, take a left turn. Kill three Ganados (one with the crossbow, a large one with a sledgehammer, and one with the shield) and destroy the head of the fourth. You should see that he's carrying the same Plaga as the Zealot leaders.
In Separate Ways, a few combatants wield other weapons such as stun prods or hatchets in conjunction to the wooden shield. They never attack with stun rods when carrying shields. One carries hatchets and a shield, he can either expose himself to throw hatchets at a short range or knock the player back with the shield if she is too close.
The phrases spoken by the Ganados give away their thoughts and/or actions, which players who know Spanish can use to their advantage. For example, villagers will occasionally say, "¡Detrás de ti, imbécil!" ("Behind you, imbecile!"), which, in turn, can alert the player that a Ganado is behind them.
The player can obtain Bottlecaps modelled after Ganados.
- Zealot w/ Scythe, Zealot w/ Shield, Zealot w/ Bowgun and Leader Zealot are four male Zealot Bottlecaps. They are all regular prizes that can be won when playing Game C. Their SFX are a variety of chants heard throughout the game.
- Don Jose, Don Diego (unmasked Salvador), Don Esteban and Don Manuel are four male Villager Bottlecaps, and are all regular prizes that can be won when playing Game B.
- Don Pedro is Don Esteban with a Plaga sprouting out of his head, and is the rare prize won in Game C.
- Isabel and Maria (Bella Sisters without bandages) are the female models, and are both regular prizes won during Game D. Their SFX are various things they shout at the player.
