The Espada (十刃, (エスパーダ), Esupāda) are the major antagonists in the Bleach franchise. They are an elite group of ten ranked Arrancars that serves under Sōsuke Aizen as his main subordinates, while serving as the main adversaries of Ichigo Kurosaki and the Gotei 13.
Biography
Created before Aizen's defection from the Soul Society, the Espada are highly important to Aizen's plans. the Espada are ten Arrancar's all of impressive strength and with a tattoo of their number in the group. Each of the members have control over one of the other forces in the Las Noches. They also are often privy to hearing Aizen's biggest secrets. The number ranks of the 10 Espada are not from 1-10, but from 0-9.
Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck was once The 3rd Espada before Tier Harribel, until she reverted into a child after ambushed by Nnoitra Gilga with the assistance from Szayel Aporro Granz.
They were actually pawns by Aizen's manipulations as he revealed it after he easily defeated Tier Harribel.

Privaron Espada
An Espada may be demoted from the group either when they lose strength or cease to be useful to Aizen, such as Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez after his left arm was cut off by Kaname Tōsen. In most cases, they will be demoted to the Privaron Espada (十刃落ち (プリバロン・エスパーダ), Puribaron Esupāda; Spanish for "Deprived Sword", Japanese for "Omission of the Ten Blades"), who are former Espada that have officially lost their rank and are assigned a three-digit number.
Being former Espada, they are far stronger than the normal Números. They reside in Tres Cifras (３ケタ (トレス・シフラス), toresu shifurasu; Japanese for "Three-digit", Spanish for "Three Digits"). Dordoni Alessandro Del Socaccio states that these former "naturally created" Espada were rendered obsolete after Aizen began artificially creating Arrancar to meet his own standards.

- While most of the Espada were established to be Vasto Lorde the only times any individual Espada was confirmed to be one was in various supplementary materials and adaptations (such as the anime, databooks, and novels).
