Dr. Caledonius is the main antagonist of the 2020-2021 HBO Max limited series Adventure Time: Distant Lands special "Wizard City".
She is the professor of Magic History at Wiz Arts. Unknown to everyone, however, Caledonius is secretly the leader of a cult dedicated to resurrecting Coconteppi, a dark cosmic entity who was the source of all magic.
She was voiced by Toks Olagundoye, who also voiced Krang Two in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie.
History
Dr. Caledonius was first seen at an audition with the other professors, where students would display their magical abilities and be given a rank. Peppermint Butler, who had been turned into a child, attempted to summon a flame from the Nightosphere, but his demonstration went wrong. Most of the professors wanted to reject him, but Caledonius said she saw potential in him and allowed him to enter the school.
When Peppermint Butler and the other students went to their Magic History class, Caledonius excitedly greeted them and had them follow her. First, she showed them a variety of fossils before showing them a column created by an order of dark wizards. She then had the students excavate the courtyard they were standing in to see if they could find anything interesting.
Later, Peppermint ran into Caledonius and expressed his frustration with his inability to generate powerful magic that impressed others. Caledonius attempted to make him feel better about himself and took him back to the courtyard. She showed him some of the artifacts she buried there, and when Peppermint still explained how distressed he was, she told him that she believed he was meant to accomplish great things. This, along with the revelation that Bufo, one of his professors, was a dark wizard, encouraged him to travel to Bufo's house. He would then try to incriminate him for the disappearance of Spader, one of the other students at the school, only to find Bufo's dead body.
Soon, Peppermint's original identity as Peppermint Butler was revealed to the city, and he was believed to have killed Bufo and Spader. Caledonius approached Peppermint's roommate, Cadebra, and they both agreed that Peppermint didn't kidnap or kill anyone. After the two of them found Peppermint, they all observed the chalice that apparently killed Bufo. Caledonius recognized it as the chalice of Coconteppi and had them follow her to a secret, underground base, built on Coconteppi's skeleton. They also noticed Spader's skeleton on the throne that she had the chalice placed on. She explained that the chalice was now in its rightful place as several other wizards emerged. All of them were actually the teachers at the school, who secretly worshiped Coconteppi.
Caledonius explained that a group of wizards hid Coconteppi's body to suppress his power, and the secret order of dark wizards she was part of had been searching for it for centuries. The chalice contained his ichor, which they planned to have someone drink so that Coconteppi could inhabit them. It's revealed that she and the other cult members kidnapped Spader and tried to resurrect their deity by having him drink from the chalice. However, when Spader drank from the ichor, it ended up killing him. Caledonius then stated that she wanted Peppermint to absorb Coconteppi's ichor. Cadebra tried to convince him not to, so Caledonius ordered the other cultists to kill her before convincing Peppermint to drink from the chalice. After drinking it, Coconteppi's spirit merged with Peppermint, transforming him into a monstrous entity known as "Pepperminteppi". Caledonius told him to destroy Wizard City and begin the "Second Age of Terror", but Pepperminteppi killed most of the cult members first.
Cadebra tried to make Peppermint fight the entity's influence, and it appeared to work, as he told her to escape. Caledonius tried to subdue him and force him to embrace Coconteppi's power, but accidentally consumed some of the ichor, which ended up killing her.
After her death, Coconteppi took full control of Peppermint and tried to kill Cadebra, but she ended up expelling him from Peppermint's body. With the dark wizards finally defeated, Peppermint was proven innocent and was allowed to continue living in Wizard City.
